Real people. Real solutions. Real weight loss!

The Case

It's amazing how much The Biggest Loser has become its own brand, and these kind of programs are part of that phenomenon. You can buy Biggest Loser protein, weights, books, mats, jump ropes, stability balls, and just about anything you can think of to go along with this disc. Understand this particular routine is aimed at people who need an easy way to get in to a fitness program. It is not a high calorie workout like the types featured on previous Biggest Loser DVDs. The Biggest Loser: 30-Day Jump Start is a DVD that will give beginners several routines and diet ideas to start off a new commitment to health and weight loss.

The one thing about the routines that gives me slight pause is they are delivered by previous contestants from the show such as Tara, Ali, and Sione rather than the trainers like Bob or Jillian. Even though Bob is front and center on the cover he does not lead these workouts. It is comforting to see previous contestants training you, because they are familiar faces for fans of the show and have a level of trust already. Yet these are not fitness experts with years of experience, and so their routines are somewhat safe and relatively easy. Sprinkled in behind them are other previous Biggest Loser contestants who join in, so you do feel like you are at the ranch working out to a degree. Going through the actual workouts I had to keep reminding myself this one is designed as a starting point, so if you are looking for something advanced and energetic you may need to chose another routine. Released at the same time The Biggest Loser: Last Chance Workout will be a DVD where you get the trainer putting through your paces, and it is definitely more intense as a workout.

You get a nice novice routine, but it is the value and replay factor that make this DVD so amazing. They suggest you workout alternating cardio and weights for twenty minutes every day for thirty days. The disc actually has on it thirty combinations to insure this happens. It marries two segments and you pick from Week One, Week Two, Week Three, and Week Four. But you can chose any combo you like simply by going to the main menu and selecting "abs" and "cardio" or "upper body" and "lower body." The disc assumes you have some hand weights, a Swiss or stability ball, and a mat or carpeted place to work out. In essence there are truly only five basic ten minute routines, but the disc finds a number of ways to pair those up. You can even chose a "play all" option and do twenty minutes of cardio, twenty minutes of weight training, and ten minutes of abs for a workout that will take about an hour to complete.

You see trainer Bob on the cover, so where is he? There are two ten minute segments which feature him giving you diet tips and motivational pointers. These are simply the kind of quick sound bites you would see the trainer provide on the show, but they are solid nuggets of wisdom worth hearing again. Also included as extras are training tips which feature the cast showing you how to set and use your equipment such as the weights and stability ball. There is also a setup option on each workout where you can chose to hear only the music, and that way you can skip all the chit chat and just workout with the Biggest Losers. The music only track is that same sort of nondescript techno you would hear in a gym like 24 Hour Fitness, so nice beat and lots of electronic bleeps and bloops. Also included is a booklet with the DVD that has some good solid low calorie food ideas for a 30 day start to a program.

All in all, for someone facing down weight loss and cardio for the first time, this is an excellent starting point. The workouts are gentle enough and easy to follow that you won't get too frustrated. Throw in some nice advice from Bob, a diet plan, and you've got a pretty nice package to inspire you to take that first step. There's truth in advertising with this one that it makes for a rather solid "Jump Start" for someone looking for that.

The Verdict

Guilty of teaching you how to start sweating off the pounds, this one's free to keep on going.
