The Case

How do the losers (in a good way!) shed poundage on The Biggest Loser? They have Jillian Michaels pushing them. Now you can too...and you don't need to sequester yourself on some ranch. 30 Day Shred requires only a set of light hand weights, a mat, and the willingness to push yourself.

This disc contains three separate workouts, each just shy of 30 minutes in length. The description on the case claims they're 20 minutes, but only if you aren't counting the warm-up and cool-down. After the aforementioned warm-up, Jillian leads us through three circuits of her 3-2-1 interval system -- 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of abs. There is a brief (very brief) stretch at the end which is definitely not enough to truly cool down and relax each muscle, but that's my only real complaint.

These workouts are high impact and will make you pant and sweat. This DVD will kick your butt, literally. There's even a move called "butt kicks." That's what it takes to get the job done though, and if you keep with it you'll be amazed and what you can do. Jillian makes it easy to keep progressing, as each workout is more intense than the last.

Some modifications are shown, but you will still need to push yourself to complete the workouts and get results. Each move is fully described and demonstrated, but usually not until after we have begun. The more you do the workouts, the easier you'll be able to jump from one move to the next.

Jillian is the antithesis of most aerobic instructors and, in my book, that's a good thing. She's tough but inspiring, without being annoying. You may exhale a bad word or two at her, but it's all worth it for killer abs like hers.

Presented in full frame format, the video is adequate. Nothing to jump up and down about, but you'll already be doing that anyway. The Dolby 2.0 stereo mix provides background music that's upbeat without being overwhelming, and Jillian's instructions come through loud and clear. Not much in the way of bonus features, but few fitness DVDs possess these anyway. What you do get is a music-only option which turns off Jillian's encouragement, letting you flow through the routine on your own inspirational energy. The Verdict

Best body of your life? Well, if you're not a former athlete and you're ready to earn it, quite possibly. Not guilty!
