My beautiful love
La la la la love
La la la la love
-- Lyrics to the 8th & Ocean theme song by "The Afters"
Britt's crying because her swimsuit is too revealing. Sabrina has skin problems. Vinci may be model of the year, but there's not an alarm clock invented that can wake him up for his go-sees. Welcome to the world of 8th & Ocean.
It's an MTV reality show about aspiring models in South Beach, Florida. That about says it all, doesn't it? 8th & Ocean is named for the location of the "model's apartment" which is paid for and stocked by the Irene Marie Modeling Agency. There are five guys and five girls living in two sexually segregated apartments. The deal is they get to live there free as long as they're booking jobs through the agency. The series, like MTV's The Hills, is a highly edited version of life, love, and trying to make it in the biz.
The first season consists of only ten episodes.
* "Sibling Rivalry"
* "Model Misbehavior"
* "Skin Deep"
* "Just Another Girl"
* "Quarter-Life Crisis"
* "She Wears it Well"
* "What Goes Around"
* "Mixed Messages"
* "A Kiss Goodbye"
I'm not exactly the demographic MTV had in mind when they made this series -- or any of their shows, actually -- yet I was drawn in by its magical powers. Maybe it's the geek in me that always dreamed of a life like this...wait, there's no "maybe" about it. It's the geek in me that always wished for a life like this. You know: thin, pretty, young, no need to worry about living expenses -- just smile big and party hearty! Yep, that's what 8th & Ocean is all about, vicariously living the model life.
Okay, so it's not all peaches and cream for these ten wannabes. Some have actual, deep, problems such as acne breakouts and deciding whether or not to get a boob job. And hey, when Teddy and Britt had to get all kissy with each other for a photo shoot after he dumped her for Heide, let me tell you, my heart bled for that poor little girl. I mean, come on, who can't relate to that?
Seriously. No, never mind. There is no seriously. You can't watch this "drama" in serious mode. It's fluffy, it's edited for angst, and it's the perfect box set for your next "girls only" night.
If by some chance you're reading this and you're a teen who wants to be a model, check out the "Advice from the Experts" special features and the "Casting Tapes." Other fun extras include the cast's visit to TRL, "MTV Overdrive" and a look at the Miami Hot Spots.
I know that the teen market is the almighty coveted dollar in advertising but come on MTV -- cut us a break. The DVD begins with four promos for other MTV shows and products, and you can't skip them. I did find that chapter skips will get you through them faster, but it's just plain annoying.
My second complaint is more of an "I wish" thing. Each episode is only a half hour long. A good portion of that time is taken up with an episode recap and beginning and ending credits. Remove the commercials and you're looking at about fifteen minutes of actual footage per episode. It's unlikely that anyone will sit down with this DVD set and watch only one episode per week. What would be nice is a feature that allows you to shut off the recaps and credits and simply run the show as two long movies. The ability to do that would have uped my enjoyment of this series 100%
The box says it all. "Heat. Glamour. Drama. It's just another day at 8th & Ocean."
The court is leaning toward a non-guilty vote but would like to keep the models on hold until we see how well Sabrina's skin clears up.
