The greatest moments in Angels baseball history.
To celebrating the 50th year of the Angels franchise, Major League Baseball productions has put together this, Angels Memories (1961-2011), a 90 minute retrospective on the successes and the heartbreak of the California sluggers. Sadly, there are no The Naked Gun references.
The program starts from the beginning, documenting how the club came to be, looking at the movers and shakers that PULLED together to usher it into existence. And from 1961 it's a sprint forward, with special attention paid to Angels stars like Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, Tim Salmon, Don Baylor, Frank Tanana, Don Sutton and Garret Anderson.
That's a interesting and enigmatic cast of characters and as the game-plan for these anthologies dictates, the file footage and (strangely chill) narration is mixed in with interviews of players, press and management, offering some nice insights into their personalities.
The bread and butter of these DVD presentations are the good times, and though there's time offered to the rough patches, the highlights, understandably, tend more towards the triumphs. The crown jewel is the 2002 World Series championship and the epic seven-game series, which found the Angels defeating the Barry Bonds-powered San Francisco Giants. Good stuff.
The only downside to an otherwise sterling presentation: John Lackey is in this. As someone privy to the goings-on of Red Sox Nation, I can say with certainty that Lackey is as unpopular in New England as a smirking weatherman predicting the next nor'easter. (It is interesting seeing a trim, pre-beer-swilling, KFC-eating Lackey actually pitching well. )
Solid DVD for you Halos fans: 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, 2.0 stereo and a selection of featurettes looking at Rod Carew, Garret Anderson, Tim Salmon, Chone Figgins, Fred Lynn, Darin Erstad and the 2007 and 2008 Angels teams.
Not Guilty. Pass the chicken!
