The Case

Bad Dog! is a show on Animal Planet that allows viewers to see various animals who tear up and run down their owner's lives. This theme is not just localized to mutts; much of the animal kingdom is taken into consideration, everything from lizards to pot bellied pigs to full sized buffalos. Each week the coveted title of "Bad Dog of the Week" is bestowed on one lucky animal (and one very unlucky owner). From chewing up blinds to stealing snacks to escaping from escape-proof fences, this is the story of animals gone wild...and the owners that love them!

How much you'll enjoy Bad Dog! Season One is going to depend on how adorable you find destructive pets. Most of the segments have to do with dogs messing up their owner's houses, or escaping from their back yards, or honking on their car horn when they head into a store. Other animals are also highlighted, including a monkey that likes to steal sugary snacks from the pantry of one pet owner. In another episode, the owner of a newly purchased parrot finds out the hard way that the mimic loving bird's pervious owner had very loud and very irritable baby. That's the bulk of the show: animals doing things to annoy their exasperated owners.

Bad Dog! is cute enough, but a little bit of the show goes a long way. Essentially, viewers are watching viral videos snagged from YouTube and strung together with excitable narration and colorful graphics. Often the pet owners are interviewed, discussing how much they love their pets even when they act like total terrors. One owner's small Chihuahua appears to be bipolar, giving kisses one minute and then barking and snapping at your face the next. He also tends to leave 'territorial poop' for his owners, sometimes on the pillow right next to them as they're sleeping. Yet the jovial owners defend their pooch, lavishing him with both love and exoneration. I'm an animal lover (my wife and I have two cats and a dog), but if I had a dog who tried to eat my face and pooped on my bed, that little devil would be out the door within thirty seconds.

Bad Dog! Season One is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. The quality of the video varies wildly -- there are times when the transfer is mostly sharp and clear (usually during interview segments), and others where the quality is less-than-stellar (which is often the videos featuring the animals). The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo in English. This is a relatively tame audio mix that gets a small boost from some of the bouncy music. Otherwise, it's a front heavy mix without much dynamic range. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. There are no bonus features.

If you're a fan of watching ferrets steal shoes or turtles snap at cats, you'll most certainly get a kick out of Bad Dog!. Although it's not the most riveting series on television (and fairly short, at only around four hours long), it's family friendly, kids will love it, and does have a few mildly funny moments (including a golden retriever that sleepwalks and runs into walls). There's a sentence I never thought I'd type, but there you go.

The Verdict

Doesn't reinvent the reality show, it just shows us animals acting like petulant children.
