The Charge

Get a Tight, Toned and Elegant Body!

The Case

Meet Mary Helen Bowers, ballerina and trainer to the stars! That last fact, including the exclamation point, is from the disc case. As is a quote from Zooey Deschanel (New Girl). We are also informed that Mary Helen was the trainer to Natalie Portman for the movie Black Swan. The important question is, does the workout deserve all this hype?

Ballet Beautiful: Body Blast consists of four workouts: Swan Arms, 15-Minute Body Blast, Butt Series Part 1, and Butt Series Part 2. Each is about 15 minutes in length. Swan Arms has us move our arms like...well, a swan (or Natalie in the movie). And that's it. No weights necessary. Or needed, as my arms were feelin' the burn. 15-Minute Body Blast is quick all over toning, starting with the abs. This segment is a floor workout, but devoid of typical ab crunches.

Both of the Butt Series certainly work our glutes, but the legs also benefit. These segments focus on lots of leg lifts -- straight and bent, back and to the side. Since we are on our hands and knees, our arms and core are working the entire time.

There is surprising little stretching involved. Although Mary Helen often leads us in what she calls a "nice" stretch, it only lasts a second or two. And since so much of this is floor work, I found my wrists were working harder -- and hurting more -- than the rest of me.

Presented in standard def 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby 2.0 Stereo, the setting is quite pale and serene (as is Mary Helen, come to think of it). The background music is classical and lovely, but I'm not sure what the crew was doing behind the camera, because man were they noisy. There are no bonus features.

You certainly don't need to be a dancer to do Ballet Beautiful: Body Blast. There are no fancy moves to learn; the exercises are similar and repeated for a few sets. But they are effective, and the combination of these segments will work all parts of you.

The Verdict

Put on your ballet slippers and become tight, toned, and elegant.
