DENISE AUSTIN: SCULPT AND BURN BODY BLITZ

The Charge

I think of Denise Austin as "The Little Engine That Could" of the fitness world. While other celebrity trainers come and go Ms. Austin keeps on keeping on through the fitness fads of the past quarter century. With the release of Denise Austin: Sculpt & Burn Body Blitz she's closing in on 90 DVD releases.

The Case

Denise Austin: Sculpt & Burn Body Blitz is not for the faint of heart or the mere beginner. It simply moves too fast to follow if you're not already in shape. It also assumes at least a passing familiarity with the training methods from which it pulls the mini-workouts. Aside from warm-up and cooldown portions there's mixed martial arts, athletic conditioning, kettlebell-inspired and cardio sculpt sections as well.

Austin tones down her trademark peppy, you-can-do-it manner in this video somewhat but that's because she's too busy to devote a lot of time to encouragement. Denise Austin: Sculpt & Burn Body Blitz is nonstop movement. With each section clocking in at less than 11 minutes there simply isn't time to do much other than get busy and get working out.

I'm a beginner to this type of high-intensity workout and I couldn't get through the whole thing in two or even three sessions. I found myself stopping during every section as I missed one thing or another and had to play catch up. The moves flow quickly from one to another and I had a hard time keeping up, always a step behind when the switches came.

Denise Austin is a pro, always knowing exactly what camera is on her and when. That being said there were some weird diagonal camera angles which threw me for a loop as did some of the cuts to her background workout partners, especially when those cuts came as we were transitioning from one exercise to another.

This is definitely high intensity and will challenge you. Adding in the weights will push your limits as well. If that is what you're looking for then Denise Austin: Sculpt & Burn Body Blitz is for you. If you're trying to ease your way back into shape then look elsewhere, you're only going to feel discouraged.

The video is clean and the audio track holds up well with no fabric brushes or any other types of audio glitches you sometimes get with a workout program.

I was really pleased with the special features, especially the custom workout option. After going through each of the sections I know which ones I can get through and which ones I need to save until I'm in better shape, thus I can customize instead of merely shelving this until I feel like I can handle the whole thing. That idea flows nicely with the 30 day workout special feature which breaks down how much of the disc you should be doing every week for the first 30 days. But it'll be a date far off in the future before I'm confident enough to employ the music-only track.

The Verdict

Not guilty.
