The Charge

Is your child a fat tub of goo? Blame Cookie Monster.

The Case

Okay, maybe that's not entirely fair. If you recall, there was a low-grade kerfuffle a while back when it was rumored that the Cookie Monster might be getting his name changed to something that implies better health, like Tofu Monster, Apple Monster, or Enfamil Monster. This DVD is quick to dispel that rumor, featuring a Matt Lauer interview with Cookie himself; turns out, he still likes cookies, but only for dessert and only in moderation. His new love? Fruit!

While I'm glad Sesame Street didn't go completely to the PC dark side, there is some sadness in this wishy-washy rebranding of an iconic television figure. I mean, come on, he's the f-ing Cookie Monster! He's all id, a glorious typhoon of impulsiveness and indulgence. It's not his fault he has an unbelievable metabolism!

Anyway, if you can get past the "cookie is a sometimes food" (Really, kids shouldn't be eating chocolate chip cookies non-stop, 24 hours a day? How about living in a garbage can; is that a good idea?), you'll find a charming anthology of Cookie Monster-themed Sesame Street antics.

You'll get such classics as "The Cookie Hood Story" (a take-off on Robin Hood), the "C is for Cookie Mash-Up," and my favorite, the epic "Cookie Monster Disco Song," which is every drop of awesome as it sounds.

Sixty-seven minutes of the blue guy, presented in full frame, 2.0 stereo, and accompanied by one extra -- a classic bit of Sesame Street called "The Gingerbread Man Song."

The Verdict

I'm not happy with the wimpier incarnation of Cookie Monster, but at least they didn't change his name. Not Guilty.
