The Charge

A seven-episode journey to the origins, artists, and techniques of American craft.

The Case

PBS presents the adventures of American craftspeople, as spotlighted by this charming, well-done series. The Peabody-winning Craft in America looks at several American artisans in each episode, highlighting their particular craft and allowing them to speak on the inspirations and motivations that drove them to create.

The seven episode series includes...

* "Memory" -- A look at tradition and the nation's "collective memory."

* "Landscape" -- Environments and surroundings.

* "Community" -- Generational traditions and group projects.

* "Origins" -- Tracing the beginnings of craft traditions.

* "Process" -- Examining how the artists develop their craft.

* "Messages" -- The political and personal narratives housed within their art.

* "Family" -- Four families spotlighted.

If you're not into crafts then, obviously, this won't be up your alley. But, if you have even a passing interest in the subject, I offer my full-throated endorsement of this program.

Anecdotal evidence: My wife, an artisan herself, was passing by while I was watching and she was immediately drawn in. I can't blame her. Each episode is well-produced and the personalities on display are interesting. Most importantly, the artists are talented and their crafts are impressive. Win win!

No extras on disc, but the technical merits are worthwhile: 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, 2.0 stereo, and English SDH subtitles.

The Verdict

Once again, Not Quilty.
