No one can escape the Elimination Chamber!
Before sending wrestling's top superstars to WrestleMania, the WWE first sends them into big steel cages. WWE: Elimination Chamber 2010 features two matches during which twelve athletes fight their way toward the two most desired titles. Here's what this pay-per-view has to offer:
* Sheamus vs. John Cena vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Randy Orton vs. Triple H vs.
Ted DiBiase in an Elimination Chamber Match for the WWE Championship
The
first match of the night is a big one, as six WWE athletes go head to head in a
title match inside the threatening chamber. At 30 minutes, this is a rather long
match, but considering the circumstances, I admit it's rather enjoyable to
watch. The pace of the fight picks up once the ring gets more crowded, and
considering six men are battling for one belt, the outcome remains unpredictable
until the very end. Each of these guys brings along a lot of energy and a
selection of solid moves, and the result is a strong opener for a PPV preceding
WrestleMania.
* Drew McIntyre vs. Kane in a Intercontinental Championship Match
Kane's matchup against McIntyre lacks the speed and variety of the opening
battle, and even though it's by no means a complete disaster, it's not exactly
PPV material either. Kane occasionally slows down the match by engaging in
submission moves, while his opponent tries to build momentum via a series of
simple kicks. Although technically clean for the most part, none of this is
particularly entertaining. Moving on...
* Gail Kim & Maryse vs. Michelle McCool & Layla in a Divas Tag Team
Match
Once again, the WWE screwed up when it comes to a divas match. At
only 4 minutes, this tag team battle really isn't worth it. Besides one or two
cool maneuvers, all we get to see here is a lot of screaming and hair
pulling.
* The Miz vs. MVP in a United States Championship Match
After
delivering a rather disappointing fight at WWE: Royal Rumble 2010, The
Miz and MVP face each other again inside the ring in this title match, which at
13 minutes turns out to be mildly entertaining. Both athletes pull off some nice
high-risk moves, but other than that, there is nothing special about this one.
It's not a memorable battle, but then again, it could be worse.
* Undertaker vs. John Morrison vs. Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio vs. CM
Punk vs. R-Truth in an Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight
Championship
CM Punk and R-Truth kick off this final Elimination Chamber
match, and a new WWE superstar joins the party every five minutes. They both
bring the match up to a decent pace, and Rey Mysterio speeds things up a bit
once he gets in on the action. The rest of the guys work it well enough, too, so
the main event is a solid finish to a disappointing pay-per-view.
This time around, someone decided to add more than just one clip to the bonus section on the DVD, but as much as I hate to say this, that someone's efforts didn't work out that well. Besides a pointless montage of a few shots showcasing the feud between Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker, the extra material includes a silly backstage interview with Chris Jericho and a quick clip from an episode of Raw. Nothing interesting here. Technically, this DVD performs well enough, offering viewers a crisp full-frame presentation with good sound.
Aside from two satisfying Elimination Chamber matches, this WWE pay-per-view disappoints. That's really all there is to say. Let's hope this year's WrestleMania will positively surprise us.
Guilty.
