The Charge

The mission comes first.

The Case

Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) is back as Sergeant Greg Parker, commander of the Strategic Response Unit (SRU), an elite and entirely fictional team of police superstars who get themselves pressed into duty when insane emergencies crop up. These can range from a plane hijacking and arson to social media bullying. Basically, if something bad and potentially laced with explosives is going down, the SRU is on the clock.

What is the hellhole where our heroes work and are constantly assaulted with all manner of exotic and malevolent violence? Why Toronto, of course! That's right, these guy are hardcore Canadian crime-fighters, so set aside any preconceived notions you might have about how safe things are due north. According to Flashpoint, it's hell on earth up there.

A show built in Canada and shown stateside on the Ion Network, Flashpoint is as generic and non-descript as its name suggests. A lot of stuff happens, the music is dramatic, quite often there's a gunfight, brows are furrowed, and sweaty dudes shout at each other...but these episodic adventures just feel like empty calories.

Season 5 is the final batch of installments, bringing 11 episodes and the finale. The plots are garden variety narratives with very few surprises (hey, would you guess that the plane hijackers are in fact libertarian militia members?!), and the series swansong is schmaltzy blah.

Paramount's set is standard def 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, Dolby 5.1 Surround, English SDH subtitles, and bupkus in the way of extras.

Flashpoint is the equivalent of state fair cotton candy; on the surface, an experience that tantalizes all your senses, but after forty-minutes you'll likely have a spot of diarrhea dribbling down your right leg.

The Verdict

So long SRU. I hardly knew U.
