The Charge

Is the third time the charm for love?

The Case

He's back. Flavor Flav, the diminutive "hype man" of rap group Public Enemy and now a reality television staple, finds himself once again attempting to find true love through the power of modern media. Assembling another collection of women each claiming to be possessed with great affection for the clock-wearing rapper, Flav will attempt to discover which hotty will do the best job of "holding things down for yer man." Will Flavor of Love: Season Three finally bring Flav the love he so desperately needs?

As with the previous seasons of Flavor of Love, Flavor puts the 21 women of the house through various trials and challenges to determine which is right for him. These include skydiving, creating a Flavor Flav restaurant, acting as nurses for Flav's broken heart, and swimming with sharks. One by one the ladies will be eliminated and the last woman standing will be contractually obligated to marry Flav and bear him children (that last part may not be true, considering the man's colossal bad luck in previous rotations of the show). Flavor is also assisted on his quest by a variety of B-list celebrities including rapper Big Boi, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, and former late night host Arsenio Hall.

Flavor seems to have expressed a desire to "class up" the selection of ladies this time around. Good luck determining what "classier" means to Flav, though; it seems to denote a girl having all her teeth and not being subject to restrictive parole conditions. The result of this heightened selection criteria seems to have been a reduction in the women willing to fight (literally) for the love of Flav. Most of the trash-talking takes place in the interview segments, and there is a shortage of fisticuffs that have become the meat and potatoes of this show. In fact, few of the women make much of an effort to show an interest in Flav, and even fewer appear distraught to be leaving upon their elimination.

The result is the most tepid season of the show yet. Amazingly, Flavor of Love: Season Three has become boring, something the previous seasons managed to avoid handily. With a series-high fourteen episodes the show seem to drag, and there is a real temptation to fast-forward through the filler to get to the finale and find out who gets the privilege of dumping Flav after the last show has concluded. Granted, there is still a stunning amount of uncensored profanity on display, but even that gets tiresome after a few episodes (the power of the word "ho" tends to diminish after being used for the 80th time).

While Flavor of Love: Season Three follows the same formula as previous seasons, the entire effort feels like a rote and obligatory mix of elements that barely makes it across the finish line. There is no reunion show between the contestants (viewers must go online with a code included in the set to see it), the extras are largely recycled clips and outtakes, and the challenges for the women are less interesting than ever. Everyone involved seems to just want to get this thing finished and take off, including this reviewer.

Flavor of Love: Season Three presents a solid video image for fans to enjoy. Despite the garish colors and lights of the various sets, there are only a few instances of artifacting on the full screen image. Audio is also impressive, the 2-channel track doing a solid job of balancing the music and dialogue of the show.

As with previous seasons, Flavor of Love: Season Three presents a collection of extras for viewers to enjoy. These include:

Casting Special: A lengthy collection of clips and interviews from the show's casting sessions. At once both fascinating and terrifying, this segment proves that many people are both crazy and desperate to get on television.

Flav's Filosophies: Several clips and interview segments in which Flav details his various opinions and philosophies on life and its elements.

Girls Gone Flav -- Ultimate Moments: A collection of extended clips from the show of arguments between the contestants. Lots of bad language and the questioning of "realness" wears thin after a few minutes.

Dirty Laundry: Three clips focusing on some of the less glamorous elements of life, including passing gas and wet dreams.

Flav and Thing 2's Parisian Date: An uncut version of a date in Paris between finalist Thing 2 and Flav. Like you would expect, it's as dull as watching any other two people out on a date, just with better scenery.

The Dead Bring Bad Luck: A cut scene in which Flav halts shooting at a location that just saw a patron die. Flav, it seems, considers a dead customer to be a sign of bad luck. It is fun to watch the various producers try and coerce him back into filming, although his reaction to the event suggests that Flav may be a little unbalanced when it comes to the issue of death.

Super trailer: An extended uncut trailer for season three.

Like much of this season, the extras included in this set also feel rote and by-the-numbers. Many of them rely on recycled materials already seen on the show, while others like Flav and Thing 2's Parisian Date are just boring. The casting sessions are the one highlight, as it is interesting to see which women were just too crazy to make it on the show. As a whole, however, the low quality of the extras matches that of the release.

Fans who are addicted to Flav's antics may find more nonsense to enjoy in Flavor of Love: Season Three, but the effort pales in comparison to previous seasons. This show seems to have finally run its course. It's time for Flav to go back to the classifieds to find a mate.

Guilty.
