The Charge

Well, Nancy Pelosi can be happy about this at least.

The Case

For fans of the San Francisco Giants and their relatively surprising World Series championship, Major League Baseball has you covered with yet another nifty feature-length treatment documenting the team's rise to the top.

The 100-minute program looks at the Giants' run, from battling it out with a so-so record in July, to their run to the National League West division title, besting the resurgent Braves, Ray Halladay, and the imposing Phillies, to a World Series showdown with the potent Texas Rangers and their at-the-time-unhittable ace, Cliff Lee.

But then you probably already knew that. Cut me some slack. How am I supposed to fill up space with "This is a nice documentary about an awesome baseball team?"

If you've never seen these baseball championship programs before, they're...well, like pretty much every other sports championship program put together: player interviews, game footage, establishing shots, dramatic narration (this time delivered by Rob Schneider?!), uncomfortably tight close-ups, and a sweeping orchestral score. All that, plus interview footage with Texas Rangers' players and executives on the losing end of the cause (something I don't recall seeing in similar discs). The majority of the runtime is devoted to the World Series, which sadly didn't run quite long enough to provide for maximum suspense. What are you going to do?

The two-disc set features Blu-ray and DVD versions of the program, both of which look decent in their respective formats. The 1.78:1, 1080i transfer is solid if a bit underachieving when compared to its HD broadcast origins. Game footage in particular doesn't quite measure up. A DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track pumps out that theatrical, blood-flowing music. Extras: a featurette on Buster Posey, footage from the World Series parade, and a series of pivotal game clips from the NLCS and the World Series.

The Verdict

Not Guilty. Get a hair cut Lincecum. You look like a hippie.
