The Charge

Step inside one of Britain's best-known manor houses.

The Case

So there's show that's been airing on PBS. It's called Downton Abbey. It's kind of popular. I see many references to it on Pinterest. From my wife. Of course. She shows me the Pinterest.

Looking to capitalize on the runaway success of their overseas import, PBS serves up an extended tour of Highclere Castle, the impressive manor that's used for the filming of the television show.

Samuel West narrates the travelogue, Secrets of Highclere Castle, as the cameras dive into the interior and exterior of the sprawling mansion. A 1,300 year-old edifice, Highclere Castle is still rife with the luxuries and remains an active homestead to this day. When it's not being rented out to be the setting for a pop culture phenomenon, Highclere is a day-to-day producer of high-end feed for race horses. Huh. How about that.

The real attractor for this release is the inside tour. There is loads of eye candy for the compelled viewer and the sixty minute runtime packs in plenty of content. The art, the books, the décor, the furniture, the rugs, the candles and the myriad of stuff you would find in a huge old house.

That's all I got for you. If you or someone you know has an abiding love for English aristocracy or Edwardian history, then you probably can't go wrong with Secrets of Highclere Castle.

The discs: standard definition 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, Dolby 2.0 stereo, English SDH subtitles, and no extras.

The Verdict

Look at that nice couch. It's nice!
