Life on what has to be at least the B-list by now.
Kathy Griffin has become her own cottage industry, now the highest grossing touring act in comedy. It makes sense then that Bravo! keeps paying her to do standup concerts they can broadcast and release uncensored on DVD. On this disc, there are two such specials filmed in different cities.
Up first is Kathy Griffin: Pants Off recorded live in Costa Mesa, California with mom Maggie bringing her daughter onstage in front of an appreciative audience. The second special Kathy Griffin: Tired Hooker was filmed a few months later in Atlantic City. Both showcase what Kathy does best, riffing on pop culture and celebrity gossip. The unfortunate thing about her standup is that it doesn't age well, so best buy or rent this thing before the whole world forgets about the Kardashians and The Real Housewives. You already can tell this material is a little behind the times, because Kathy references her TV show My Life on the D-List which ceased production in 2010 after six seasons.
Shout! Factory gives us these shows uncensored, so we get plenty of F-bombs you wouldn't hear on basic cable. The standard definition 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers aren't super crisp. In fact, the visuals are quite soft on purpose, as Kathy's production team works hard to diffuse the stage lighting and blur her image just enough so she appears a little more luminous. Oh, and the disc cover features a very airbrushed shot of her in full Betty Paige modem, taken by gay celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz (RuPaul's Drag Race). The Dolby 2.0 Stereo mix is predictable and perfectly suited to these monologue-driven specials. Bonus features include excised footage from both shows, and it's nice to see more bits that for some unexplained reason got thrown out.
Kathy Griffin: Pants Off / Tired Hooker is par for the course, and fans will be thrilled to get two concerts for the price of one DVD. Even though the material is quickly growing stale (e.g. Michelle Bachman, Pajama Jeans), it's still great fun. As charming as ever, Kathy is free to go on making fun of everyone in Hollywood.
Guilty of making me want to watch The Real Housewives.
