LEGENDS OF FLIGHT 3D (BLU-RAY)

The Charge

Airbus vs. Boeing: oh, it's on.

The Case

The 3D Blu-ray releases trickle in and if any film has been designed to throw stuff in your face, it's this one. Originally created for playback in IMAX, Legends of Flight appears to have been designed with the explicit purpose to provide a memorable visceral experience.

To outline basic flight principles as well as the ins and outs of jet engine functionality, director Stephen Low has employed simple, yet colorful and dynamic computer graphics that fly all around the screen and come zipping straight into your grill. These catchy pyrotechnics are sandwiched between excellent real-time flight sequences and compelling footage from within Boeing's massive construction facility (the largest building in the world, apparently).

The story that drives the 40 minute documentary is Boeing's search to revolutionize passenger aircraft. With Airbus unveiling its monster airliner, the suits at Boeing work to shock the world with their own creation, the 787, the development of which ran nearly three years overdue. The 787 eventually made its maiden voyage in 2009 and is so efficient it may have indeed ushered in a new technological wave of air research.

All this to say you'll get a decent amount more than just pretty imagery sailing by your face. I can take or leave many of these IMAX productions, but Legends of Flight is genuinely engaging from start to finish. Just getting a few glimpses into Boeing's facility made me feel like Charlie Bucket. The fact that there is plenty of eye candy only adds to this disc's value. Recommended in all dimensions.

The specs: a strong 1.78:1, 1080p transfer flush with razor-sharp resolution, three crisp 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks (English, French, Spanish), a 25-minute making-of documentary, and some text-only facts about the featured planes.

The Verdict

Not Guilty. Go fly the friendly skies.
