The Charge

Almost as funny as blood blisters.

The Case

Mad Magazine was a critical element in my pre-adolescent formative years and I'll always be grateful to Al Jaffee, Mort Drucker, and Dick DeBartolo for showing me the joys of low-budget black-and-white two-dimensional comedy. But between the sporadically painful Mad TV and now this colon blockage of an animated series, I have no more good feelings remaining for the brand.

Mad is so terrible it makes its lame live-action counterpart look like whatever awesome comedy show God watches in His holy rumpus room. I thought Seth Macfarlane's stuff was the nadir for painful, gag-happy animation. Uh uh. This crap will melt your brain.

The humor is so base and juvenile I thought the target audience was ten-year-olds, like this was a kids show Cartoon Network was producing. Nope, it's built for grown-ups or at least teenagers (and that's giving them the benefit of the doubt). Regardless, I don't care what age group you may fall into -- babies included! -- there is nothing but godawful misery awaiting you here.

Episodes run just over 10 minutes and the skits are essentially a steady stream of pop culture references bolstered with occasional attempts at humor, emphasis on attempt -- lots of Justin Bieber, a handful of Glee, and an overwhelming amount of Twilight.

You know what Mad is? The animated version of a Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer movie. (I should have just written that in the beginning.)

If you're still intent on wasting your time, the DVD proves to be perfectly mediocre: full frame, 2.0 surround and no extras.

The Verdict

Guilty. William Gaines is spinning in his grave like a lathe.
