Let's have a Jewish Holiday!
Mama Doni -- actually Doni Zasloff Thomas -- is a hip Sheryl Crow-type singer with a lot of warmth. Her songs about Jewish traditions have a sound that's almost country or bluegrass. They're also a perfect way to explain the Jewish faith to youngsters of any faith.
Mama Doni's Jewish Holiday Party is a DVD with three episodes she produced, one apiece devoted to Channukah, Passover, and Shabbat. They mix Doni's music with simple explanations of why the Jewish people celebrate each holiday, and then a cooking segment on how to prepare traditional food. For youngsters, these fast-moving looks at religious celebrations are all cute and fun, with a good-natured host leading the way.
Included is a CD that lets you listen to all thirteen songs on your own, providing background music as you celebrate a Jewish holy day.
The DVD is straightforward without any flourishes. The transfer is clean and crisp with nice colors and fine detail. There are no digital artefacts or anything to distract. The sound is a basic stereo in English, and it is clear without distortion or hiss. The only extra is the aforementioned CD. The entire runtime is only 66 minutes, so expect only 11 minutes spent on each holiday.
Jewish parents have a hard time finding appropriate material for their kids, and this is a quality product that should entertain as well as educate. Adults will find it a bit too simplistic, but it's interesting to see these traditions explained simply and concisely. It's funny to hear all these Hebrew traditional songs done in country and bluegrass, but it is catchy!
A Jewish holiday party shouldn't make anyone feel guilty. That's your mom's
