The Charge

The manic comic energy of Robin Williams in full hurricane force.

The Case

The incredibly talented Robin Williams returns to his standup roots in more than two hours of synaptic machine gun fire. This material is not for the young, prudish, or faint of heart. This is Robin Williams live, raw, and absolutely hilarious.

Recorded and broadcast live July 14, 2002 on HBO, this was the culminating performance of Williams' sold out 2002 standup tour. Direct from the Broadway Theatre in New York City, Williams bolts out of the gate and sprints non-stop for 126 minutes. This marathon of rapid-fire comedy bounces back and forth from the Winter Olympics to international politics...from the Bible to golf...from cats and dogs to Viagra and female orgasms. To be perfectly honest, you have to see it to believe it. There is not one joke I could translate here that would effectively capture the timing and delivery of Williams himself.

Unlike most standup comedians, Robin does not do the same show night after night. Yes, there are elements and routines that remain the same, but his bi-polar delivery gives each and every performance a life of its own. At times, it's clear his mouth is working overtime to catch up with his brain. The man is a comic genius and this disc will require multiple viewings to effectively process each and every joke. If you are looking for an opportunity to escape the mundane torture of everyday life and laugh out loud for two full hours, by all means purchase this disc. Not only do you get the full, uncensored performance, but Columbia throws in backstage footage, a sit-down interview between Robin and director Marty Callner, a three minute collection of each and every grunt, grown, and indescribable noise Williams makes during the performance, and -- the piece d' resistance -- a parental advisory "Easter egg" (found on the bottom/right of the Bonus Features page) showcasing a mind blowing two minute blitzkrieg of every profane utterance Robin gives birth to.

Like the greatest roller coaster ever created, by the end of the ride Williams is completely exhausted and so are we -- but it was worth every minute. Presented in 1.33:1 full frame format with Dolby 5.1 Surround, I cannot give a higher recommendation to any live comedy DVD than Robin Williams -- Live on Broadway. Case dismissed!
