The Charge

Tigers win!

The Case

The Detroit Tigers won the World Series in 1984. If you're a Tigers fan and, say, you might be extra inclined to revisit this success this year (for no reason, really), it will probably behoove you to score this MLB set and relive all five games (or even just the four they won) to recapture that delectable taste of victory.

In the 1984 Fall Classic, the Tigers squared off with the San Diego Padres, a team that was clad in some brutally ugly jerseys. I also learned, thanks to the robust set of liner notes that accompanied the set, this Series was referred to as the "fast food series." The Padres were owned by the Kroc family, founders of McDonald's and the Tigers' Tom Monaghan was the Domino's Pizza guy. So there's that.

Anyone familiar with these sets should know what to expect: unvarnished baseball. That's all you're going to get here. No extras, no in-game bits, nothing; just the original television broadcasts and an option for the overlaid radio broadcasts.

Of course it has to be said: if you're not a Tigers die-hard, I have no clue why you'd want shell out dough for Detroit Tigers: 1984 World Series Collector's Edition. The series itself wasn't terribly remarkable. It wrapped up in five games and featured very little drama, save for a three-run eighth in the final game. But even that one ended 8-4, Tigers, so...

One more irksome nugget: these games were broadcast before someone had the bright idea to have the score permanently docked on screen. So you're going to have to strap in for the duration, kids, if you want the full experience.

The DVD: full frame, 2.0 stereo, and those radio broadcast tracks. And the liner notes. Those are actually pretty interesting.

The Verdict

Not guilty, but you'll be out cold unless you're a Tigers fanatic.
