From the UK, the classic reality-meets-archaeology series, featuring a group of enterprising historians taking to varied pieces of acreage to bury their shovels into the turf and come up with something awesome. Like a Romanic sword. Or a phallus! (Both of which are found throughout the course of the investigations.)
Tony Robinson leads the Time Team. A glance at his attached bio reveals that the man is an accomplished actor and comedian, as well as a history buff. This all comes through in his approach on the show; he's energetic, charismatic and obviously gets a big kick out of running around and playing in the dirt.
Time Team: Favorite Digs brings eight episodes, hand-picked by the team. It's a rollicking series of adventures, with the crack squad seeking out Saxon relics, World War II rusted-out hulks, and many other treasures from different eras. Each show is just south of an hour, and features the Time Team doing their research, groundwork, chatting-with-the-locals, laying the grids, cordoning off the site, and then getting down and dirty until they excavate their prize(s). Robinson lays down the commentary throughout the process and everyone just seems to really, really enjoy playing in the grime.
Eight episodes on three discs, totaling 407 minutes of digging fun, plus three extra episodes (including the debut episode), team biographies and a hefty 16-page viewer's guide with a glossary of terms and historical facts.
These folks are engaging in their own right, but Time Team is first and foremost an educational show. While everyone's nice and jolly, don't expect to be bowled over by their wit. I am confident, however, if you enjoy anything history or archaeology-related, there is satisfactory viewing to be had here.
