Greatest World Series ever?
I heard that label tossed around when referring to these games, the seven-game 1991 epic fought between the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves. And while I was apathetic to hardball goings-on in the early 1990s, the names here are the stuff of sports legend: David Justice, Tom Glavine, Kirby Puckett, and Ken Hrbek (mainly because of his phonics-defying string of surname consonants).
Still...Greatest World Series ever? Skeptical, I took these seven games for a spin, and I'm not sure if I can quibble with that assertion. I certainly haven't seen every World Series ever played, but judging by the quality and closeness of the games, the fact it went the whole distance, and the individual heroics that transpired on the diamond, a strong case can be made in its favor.
Here are all seven games, complete in their original broadcast format, without commercial interruption. There is no pomp and circumstance, just a jump straight into the games. Chapters are broken down by innings and there's an audio set-up, but that's it; these are the broadcasts, sweet and simple. Jack Buck and Tim McCarver's call of the games remain intact.
Minnesota Twins: 1991 World Series Collector's Edition is a seven disc set, with each game placed on a disc and A&E does a nice job with the presentation. Each slim disc case features printed trivia and stats and the innings are broken down by at-bats. Granted, these aren't boundary-breaking bonus features, but considering there are zero frills on-disc, anything is appreciated. And for the target audience of this release -- hardcore baseball fans and Twins die-hards -- the stats and info should be a welcome addition.
The technical points are about what you would expect: serviceable full frame (taken straight from the source tapes) and 2.0 stereo.
Not Guilty. Pretty much a must-own for Twins fan.
