Wrestling and stuff.
WWE's Over the Limit pay-per-view event features the culmination of a bunch of storylines and character arcs that I -- a woeful ignoramus of the contemporary ebbs and flow of professional wrestling -- am completely lost on. So please excuse my lack of in-depth analysis.
The headlining match is between John Cena -- who (judging from the decidedly mixed reaction he gets from the audience) seems to have become far more of a polarizing figure since the last WWE disc I reviewed -- and some schmuck named John Laurinaitis, a borderline geriatric who is obviously written as a preening douchebag. These two obviously have extensive history together, which hits the boiling point during this decidedly off-kilter match. I say off-kilter because it's so ridiculously one-sided. Ultimately, the whole thing devolves into a series of slapstick gags perpetrated by Cena, until the outcome is influenced by a trademark WWE run-in gimmick. WWE: Over the Limit 2012 is less an exercise in technical wrestling and more a goofball way to advance a storyline.
Luckily, for fans of the craft, the matches that preceded this boobfest are far more grapple-happy:
WWE Championship Match -- CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan
Fatal 4-Way Match for the World Heavyweight Championship -- Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton
WWE Tag Team Championship Match -- Kofi Kingston and R-Truth vs. Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler
Divas Championship Match -- Layla vs. Beth Phoenix
The DVD is straightforward, essentially serving up the matches 1-2-3, presented in standard definition 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, Dolby 2.0 Stereo, and an extended Sheamus interview as your lone extra.
Not much to say, except Not Guilty.
