Kickboxing's one of the hip new ways to exercise. Ever since Billy Blanks went hog wild with Tae Bo, a multitude (at least a dozen) of these punching-and-kicking fitness programs have popped up.
If this is the kind of cardio workout you're looking for, Anchor Bay has a pretty nifty disc for you. Kickbox Bootcamp is fronted by Keli Roberts, a fitness expert who is so jacked she would have little trouble beating me to death with my own spleen.
The program is chopped up into five, 10-minute sessions, with each bout aimed at a specific outcome: Basic Training, Ultimate Buns and Thighs, Arm and Shoulder Sculptor, Washboard Abs, and Fat Burning Blast.
This tactic is useful, as you (the exerciser) can pick and choose any 10-minute chunk you want to, pinpointing the body parts you want to augment. Additionally, in an innovative little twist, there's a programming mode, which allows you to customize and arrange the order of the exercises any way you want. It's an easy setup that takes advantage of the DVD player's program mode, made easier to navigate through the disc's menu system.
The only accessories needed with this disc are hand-weights and the willingness to brutalize yourself. Seriously, some of these workouts look pretty killer, specifically the Washboard Abs and Fat Burning Blast maneuvers. Keli Roberts makes it look easy enough, but she could probably bench-press a Saab.
Luckily for those of us not as limber as the fair hostess, the other workouts, particularly Basic Training, are less hard-hitting, and should provide a nice intro to the punishing stuff to follow.
Like I said in my review for Dance off the Inches I'll say for this disc: if you're looking for an exercise regimen that's a little different (like dancing in the former), Anchor Bay's got the program for you. It's a robust disc, featuring nearly an hour's worth of varying degrees of butt-kicking workouts. The customization gimmick is pretty cool and user-friendly as well.
A seven-day meal plan, complete with recipes, is included with the disc to complement the exercises. If I had an ounce of motivation and wasn't too insecure to kickbox in my living room with the neighbors watching, I could see this program whipping me into a shape other than a rhombus.
