All Rise...Judge Roy Hrab was amusemest minimus. Editor's NoteOur review of The Legend of Awesomest Maximus (Blu-ray), published March 20th, 2012, is also available. The ChargeSome guys are just awesomer. Opening StatementHow far you've fallen, National Lampoon. What happened to the days of Animal House and National Lampoon's Vacation? Facts of the CaseA Trojan general, Awesomest Maximus (Will Sasso, College Road Trip), is responsible for maintaining peace between his country and Greece. Unfortunately, this dim oversexed doofus brings the two countries the brink of war…and other shenanigans. The EvidenceThe Legend Of Awesomest Maximus is low-brow, offensive, crude rubbish. Imagine someone putting Gladiator, Troy, and 300 in a blender and flushing the result down the toilet. That's it in a nutshell. There's little positive to take away from this experience. It's filled with gratuitous nudity, swearing, grossout humor, and vulgar jokes (gender, sexuality, race, you name it). This is juvenile humor to the extreme, a long string of poorly conceived material with unimaginative nods to recent sword and sandal pictures. The Legend Of Awesomest Maximus is loaded with characters like King Looney (Rip Torn, Wonder Boys), Testiclees (Ian Ziering, Beverly Hills 90210), Hotessa (Kristanna Loken, Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines), King Erotic (Khary Payton), and Minoritees (Tony Cox, Bad Santa). Hilarious, right? Don't get me wrong. I like juvenile humor. Step Brothers is hilarious. But The Legend Of Awesomest Maximus is just painful. And the film was directed by Jeff Kanew, who was behind Revenge Of The Nerds. What gives? Presented in standard definition 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, the visuals are clear and the color palette strong. Same for the Dolby 5.1 audio mix, which is robust and crisp. Mercifully, aside from the trailer, there are no extras. Closing StatementThe Legend Of Awesomest Maximus is trashy. Watch at your own risk. The VerdictMaximus guiltiest.
