Get inspired, get moving, and get fit!
For three seasons, NBC's The Biggest Loser has assembled a group of overweight Americans in a California ranch house for three months. Replete with healthy food, personal trainers, and a fully-equipped gym, they undergo personal and team challenges while struggling to lose as much weight as possible. A contestant is voted off each week, and the player who ultimately survives elimination and drops the greatest amount of weight is crowned the "biggest loser," taking home $250,000 in prize money.
To capitalize on the show's popularity, a workout disc (The Biggest Loser Workout) was released following the show's second season and promptly became a national bestseller. The trend continues, as the third season's participants and trainers have been recruited for the second DVD release, The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2.
The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2 is geared toward the new or inexperienced exerciser. It features the two personal trainers from the show (Bob Harper and Kim Lyons) and offers nine different workout routines, including a warm-up and cool-down section. Six contestants from the current season of The Biggest Loser join the fun to inspire and motivate the home user.
The DVD is divided into nine workout sections, such as "PowerSculpt Bootcamp" and "CardioMax," and is further divided into female and male segments (the female workouts don't use heavy weights). Trainers Bob and Kim are challenging but not intimidating, and a constant switching of camera angles allows several different views of the exercises as they are performed. Locations are varied, including indoor gyms, poolside settings, and the great outdoors.
The customization option of the workouts is a nifty feature. Users select routines from the menu of nine, and the total time of the custom workout created displays on an on-screen stopwatch before you begin. Users can add and remove routines, reset the entire workout, or double up on a routine to really push their limits. Each exercise has a quick description of what is involved, and you can choose to work with the trainer's descriptive instructions or just the background music provided.
On the downside, the routines offered here are less polished than other workout DVDs. The participants aren't professionals and often seem to be out of sync with their trainer. It's probably best to follow the trainer during the routines, as participants often take short-cuts or appear unsure of how to complete the exercises correctly.
The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2 provides a few bonus features to play with. "Inspirational Stories" reviews the progress of a few contestants to get you motivated, and there is a series of "trailers" (actually ads) for other workout DVDs. The meat of the special features is the recipe and cooking section, which presents two recipes for each of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Trainer Bob and The Biggest Loser 2 alumni Matt and Suzy prepare three recipes in-kitchen, and the remaining three recipes are presented as a voice-over reading by Bob, accompanied with photographs of the finished meal. The live presentations are awkward at times, as they do not seem to be well-rehearsed and neither Matt nor Suzy are professional chefs (Bob mostly stands around and chimes in about why the recipe is healthy). Not coincidentally, the three recipes chosen to be presented by live demonstration all happen to feature Jennie-O turkey products, which are advertised heavily throughout the DVD and its packaging.
The audio and video for The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2 won't let you down. The full screen image is solid and defect-free, and the 2.0 Dolby Digital audio is clear and crisp. Some of the workout music is a little "techno" for me, but it is never so loud as to drown out the trainer instructions.
In conclusion, The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2 is an effective tool for the beginner just getting back into shape. The workouts and trainers aren't intimidating, and the customization of the routines allows users to make their sweat-sessions as challenging as they desire. It's unfortunate that the contestants weren't better versed in the routines, but seeing regular people working out is as much the appeal of this disc as the resulting health benefits.
