The Charge

"Get 'er done!"—Larry the Cable Guy

The Case

Prepare yourself to get back in the saddle as your favorite redneck comedians (oh, pardon me: I mean "urban impaired" comedians) when the Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again! That's right, the best that the south—and I mean the deep south—has to offer are back: Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White, Bill Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy! In this sequel to the popular hit Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie, the boys take center stage to rant about everything from relationships to diarrhea to shooting chickens at airplane windows…and then some. Hoooo-wee!

A few years back, I reviewed the original Blue Collar Comedy Tour and found it to be a pretty funny endeavor. As with most stand-up comedy specials, the jokes are never as funny when you're sitting at home naked, by yourself, and eating Fritos on the couch—everything's always funnier when you're with a flesh and blood crowd. For Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again, I decided to try something different: I watched it with my bathrobe while munching on Bugles. I noticed no discernable difference, except that I had a larger area to wipe my hands on after eating my snacks.

I enjoyed Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again, though not as much as the original film. During the first film, I was more impressed by Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy than Bill Engvall and Jeff Foxworthy. This time around, I enjoyed Larry but found Foxworthy to be funnier than Engvall and White. Foxworthy's rants about relationships, family, and pooping (all of them seemed to like to talk about washroom woes) ended up ticklin' my tater tots this time around. On the other hand, Ron White seemed to grumble more than last time (while still funny, his jokes seemed to almost be on auto-pilot). As usual, Larry the Cable Guy stole the show from everyone with his stupid-yet-hysterical rants about being a trailer park goofball. At one point he quips: "I got a vasectomy at Sears. When I get excited, the garage door opens." Hey, it may not be pretty but at least it's pretty funny.

Though each comedian has strengths and weaknesses, as a whole these are four very funny fellows. I think the reason these guys have become so popular is that they are rooted in the ideals and everyday trappings of the workingman. While I'm sure all four men have amassed a wealth beyond their wildest dreams, they've never abandoned their ancestral roots—in other words, they still love to talk about farting, riding in big Chevy trucks, and kissin' your cousins. Down home comedy never tasted so sweet.

Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, a step up from the full frame presentation by Warner on the previous film. The transfer shows limitations, though it's not surprising considering that this was mostly shot on what appears to be high end video. The colors and black levels are in very good shape without any noticeable defects in the image. Also included is a full frame version of the film, though why in tarnation would anyone want to watch that?

The soundtrack is available in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround as well as 2.0, both in English. The 5.1 mix on this disc is better than expected—there were times where I felt I was really in the audience watching the comedians on stage. During time of hooting and applause both the front and rear speakers were engaged. This mix isn't amazing, though it works great for the film it's supporting. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles.

I wasn't surprised that Paramount did not include any extra features on this disc. What I was surprised about was the fact that it didn't even include a scene selections menu! They must-a had some backwoods yahoos workin' on this here DVD!
