The key to a good exercise plan is to pick something you enjoy doing anyway and do it regularly enough to see cardiovascular benefits. It's much easier to stick to a workout if it's something you already enjoy than to try to force yourself to do an activity you hate. For numerous reasons, many people strongly dislike, or can't partake, in the traditional cardio workouts like running, biking, and swimming. Although walking is a great cardio workout if done properly, the intensity just isn't there for those who want to lose a lot of weight. So, many people turn to exercise videos to fill their cardio void, and many of those feature strange movements and annoying repetition. The people behind the reality show So You Think You Can Dance noticed this, so instead of releasing a cardio video with a bunch of stair steps and running in place, they got some of their trainers to make a video based on dancing as a cardio workout. The resulting So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit: Cardio Funk provides three different workouts for three different styles of dance, plus a warm up and cool down. If traditional cardio isn't your thing and you want to bust a move, then Cardio Funk may be the workout video for you.
Cardio Funk has a lot going for it:
• It's smart. The trainers stress warming up, cooling down, and keeping it fun. All three are pretty essential for a good workout; the first two for avoiding injury, and the last for keeping you coming back to work out.
• It's diverse. There are three trainers with three styles of dance. This means that it's more likely you'll find moves you like, and it also means that with three different workouts, it's harder to get bored. Each individual workout is between 7 and 14 minutes long, so it's easy to squeeze one in. Also, they can be combined to make a 25-minute workout if there's more time. There's also the warm up, cool down, and a bonus dance.
• It's clear. The trainers slow it down during the instruction part and show the moves from different angles so the moves are easy to see (even if they're not always easy to get the first few times).
• The trainers. They're enthusiastic without ever quite getting annoyingly bubbly. They also really seem to be enjoying what they're doing, not just plastering on a fake smile for the show. Finally, they emphasize fun, which is a good thing for a workout to do.
• The DVD is well thought out. Everything is easy to navigate. The three styles/trainers are broken into three different menus. They've separated each routine into an instruction plus workout and strictly workout sections. So, if you want to run the first few times with instructions you can, but once you've mastered the moves you can go straight to the workout. There aren't a lot of extraneous trailers or advertisements at the beginning, which makes getting straight to the workout easier. The video and audio were solid, though unremarkable.
However, I don't think I'll be returning to Cardio Funk, and here's why:
• I don't really like to dance. If dancing isn't your thing, then Cardio Funk probably isn't for you.
• The learning curve is pretty steep. I don't generally dance, so all the moves were new to me, and learning them all would take a while. Also, because I don't dance, it's not like I'm going to find a second use for any of these cardio moves on the dance floor. Those who prefer simple cardio should avoid this disc.
• I'm afraid I'd get bored pretty easily. Part of this is because I'm not a dancer, and part of it is that there really aren't that many minutes of cardio on the disc once you've mastered the routines.
Cardio Funk is a good idea wrapped in a solid technical package. I wouldn't recommend this as a sole cardio video, but for the dance-inclined, it seems like a fine addition to the workout shelf.
