All Rise...

Judge Dawn Hunt encourages everyone to check it out. Now if she only knew what it was.

The Charge

Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule airs at 4:30 am on Channel 5, followed by Mass for Shut-Ins at 5:00, and The Married News at 6:00.

The Case

"Hey you! Did ya ever wander what happened with the dinasaurs? Well, this don't tell you. But you can learn about many of the things you want to check out. Like what happens when puppets get you scared. What to do if you're ugly. What are good foods to put in your body. Who is your dad and other questions answered. My friend Denny and me worked very hard on it. Come on, don't be a hunk. Just buy it. If you end up not liking it, just donate it to the library you dinghuss! Thank you Channel 5, for letting me use that studio in doing my show. Signed, Dr. Steve Brule. P.S. My mommy loves this show, so you better get this tape."

Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule is one of those rare gems that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do: pay homage to the local cable access shows of the 1980s. There are no aspects left to chance and the entire effort proudly follows in the tradition of mockumentaries like This is Spinal Tap. No element is more carefully crafted or more important than Dr. Steve Brule (John C. Reilly, Wreck-it Ralph) himself. Within the first minute, it's glaringly apparent that if Reilly didn't commit 100% to this concept, the entire show would be a colossal failure. No matter what character he's playing, the one thing they all have in common is Reilly's earnestness in translating them from script to screen. Dr. Steve Brule is by far my favorite and Check it Out! was a surprise and a delight I can't recommend highly enough.

From the Muzak and crazy wipes between screens, to the community calendar which precedes every show, Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule looks, feels, and sounds like it came straight from the MTV generation. This is one of those occasions where the less you know going in, the more it's going to affect you; so I'm going to just skim the surface here. In each episode, Dr. Steve Brule tackles a different subject, educating the viewers on everything from health to fear. Looking like a cross between PBS legend Bob Ross and folk music icon Art Garfunkel, Brule is an uneducated man whose thirst for knowledge is at odds with his claim to already know everything. He constantly mispronounces things and misunderstands what he's being told. He'll then invite guests to come on, like comedian Maria Bamford (WordGirl) who plays a health expert, to further explore the topic of conversation. To their credit, everyone involved plays it straight, and no one is better at it than Reilly.

Presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, the video plays like an old VHS recording; intentionally bad, with a washed out palette and the red green balance slightly out of sync, so everyone appears to have a somewhat undead look. The Dolby 2.0 Stereo is simple, but anything more would defeat the purpose. Bonus features include extended and deleted scenes.

I absolutely loved Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule: Seasons 1 and 2. This is a must-see for fans of the mockumentary genre and definitely worth the purchase.
