The Case

The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup last year and this is their story.

Following a tumultuous batch of years where the once-proud Blackhawks were regarded as a pathetic franchise, the team went through a dramatic rebuilding phase, supplementing their stud young talent with battle-tested, toothless veterans, and built a contender that bagged the second overall seed in the West for the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs.

With interviews featuring players, coaches, and media figures, this hour-long NHL-produced documentary traces Chicago's run to eventual glory, focusing mainly on the playoff dash, with twenty minutes or so devoted to the championship series with the Flyers. The program opens with a short bit on the Blackhawks storied history, as well as their not-too-long-ago failures, and then it's right into the action. Each playoff series is given its own identity, which fuels the drama.

If you've seen one of these special championship DVDs for any sport, then you know what to expect: high-quality game footage, dialogue with the participants, over-dramatic orchestral score, and a candid sequence or two. NHL and Warner Bros. deliver all of that, and Blackhawk fans should siphon much joy from this quality production.

The DVD is a solid performer, fronted by a top-drawer 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and a 2.0 stereo audio mix. Extras: Footage from the 2006 and 2007 NHL drafts (Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane), a look at the Chicago parade celebration, behind the scenes of cleaning the Stanley Cup, and footage from the celebratory locker room after the championship.
