All Rise...

The Charge

"I love being the center of attention."

Opening Statement

See Christina brush her teeth. See Christina wash off her makeup. Listen to Christina inform the world how to pronounce her name. Listen to Christina perform "Genie in a Bottle" at least four times. It may have been more but I lost count. Sorry.

The Evidence

First of all a little bit about me. I am not female and not between the ages of nine and sixteen, so a lot of this was probably lost on me but I can understand where this video travelogue is coming from and who it is directed towards.

In the course of 84 minutes you learn how Christina first auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club (or MMC as she and her good friend Britney Spears referred to it) at age nine and finally got her call back at age twelve. Talk about waiting by the phone for a long time. But I digress. You get to see and hear about the various music Christina likes and to her credit, Etta James is on that list. You learn that Christina likes to pray with her dancers before every show. We also get to see some of Christina's devoted fans who know all her moves and the vocals to the songs. Did I mention we also get to see Christina perform "Genie in a Bottle" quite a few times?

I suppose for what it is Genie Gets Her Wish, is okay. I mean we are talking about an 18 year old girl here. She likes to shop and hang out with her friends. She drinks bottled water and Coke-a-Cola. No big surprises. Although, I must admit the main thing that struck me about her is, how she sometimes, so painfully, looks her age. Meaning she looks just like the child playing "dress and act like a grownup." The question that kept popping in my mind was, is this what JonBenet Ramsey would have become if she had been allowed to grow up? Morbid, I know, but still…

Genie gets her Wish comes from BMG Music and RCA and the picture is pretty solid, especially considering there are different types of film and video used all during the presentation. Colors are pretty solid and the black and white sequences are true with no sign of bleed.

Soundwise the Dolby Surround is clear and well balanced. The songs bounce and you can clearly make out all of Christina's views on life and love.

The Rebuttal Witnesses

Not that much in the way of extras. You get a photo gallery of Christina and web links. Oh, and a couple of bonus videos. "What a Girl Wants" and some song called "Genie in a Bottle." Of course that is more than what Disney, MGM or Paramount usually give us so I suppose I really should not complain.

Closing Statement

This is one of those preaching to the choir kind of things. If you are an Aguilera fan, you have already forced your parents to buy this DVD and are torturing them with it right now. And on top of that you couldn't care less what a 30-something year old male has to say about it. If you are not an Aguilera fan or have never heard of her you did not bother to read this to begin with or have long since gone away to listen to your fondly remembered Debbie Gibson CDs.

The Verdict

The question posed to the court is this. Is Christina Aguilera another Madonna or another episode of VH1's "Where are they Now?." Case Dismissed!
