The Charge

The Original Latin King Of Comedy Is Back.

The Case

In Paul Rodriguez Presents: Comedy Rehab long-time Latino stand-up icon Paul Rodriguez hosts a group of new comedic talent. The performance is a recording of a live act given in May 2008 at the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rodriguez performs along with fellow Latino comics Gene Pompa, Shayla Rivera, and Manny Maldonado.

Rodriquez is up first. He riffs on white New Mexicans speaking Spanish, family planning, the tendency of men to "wander," Latino mothers, the importance of seeing a woman's mother before getting married, his appreciation for large women over skinny ones, signs of aging, Viagra and Cialis, and the benefits of being Mexican (e.g., they never get eaten by wild animals).

The second performer is Pompa. He gives a Mitch Hedberg like routine, a mix of weird observations and odd stories.

Up next is Rivera. She talks about being a mother, her past career as a rocket scientist (this is actually true and not a gag), come-on lines that men use at bars, and the differences in parenting styles between Latinos and whites.

Last is Maldonado. He is a twitchy performer with a nervous laugh. He talks about marriage, the problems with kids today, comparisons between Mexicans and whites, and has some good material about white people picking fruit.

The technical aspects are on par with other Comedy Central specials. Audio and video are fine.

The substantial extras composed of behind-the-scenes footage of Rodriguez et al organizing and promoting the event. There are also bonus concert acts, including an additional Rodriguez routine, Dennis Gaxiola's opening act, and Benny Martinez warming-up the audience. They are mildly amusing.

There are laughs here, but nothing hysterical. It's a rental at best. I didn't really get into the show and didn't find much A-level material. There are a lot of standard ethnic/racial comparison jokes. Also, some material will be inaccessible to non-Latinos, especially when the comics occasionally speak in Spanish with no subtitles provided. However, the audience really appeared to enjoy the show, so what do I know?
