The Case

Scotsman Craig Ferguson (The Late Late Show) became an American citizen in early 2008. Following this, he went on a stand-up tour. Craig Ferguson: A Wee Bit O'Revolution is proud, newly-minted patriot Ferguson's performance at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts in October 2008.

Ferguson covers a lot of ground in his autobiographical act, filled with observations about being a citizen, meeting George W. Bush, Sean Connery's acting ability, coming to America, his mom, a dilemma he faced while staying at a hotel in San Francisco, the erratic antics of Tom Cruise, childbirth, and the plastic surgery epidemic in Hollywood. The funniest bits are Ferguson's comments on Connery speaking with a Scottish accent no matter what a character's ethnicity is, especially the Spaniard Ramirez in Highlander. Another good bit is a criticism of James Doohan's Scottish accent as Scotty on Star Trek.

There's also a section about his twenty year alcohol/drug addiction and time in rehab. This is a "sad clown" moment. Ferguson jokes about having done heroine and cocaine, and the difference between alcoholics and junkies. I find it difficult to laugh at this type of humor because they are tragic events and were a dark period in Ferguson's life, but hats off to him for getting his demons under control.

Unfortunately, we were sent a screener copy to review and not final product, so my comments on the technical aspects cannot be relied on to reflect the retail version. For example, the screener intermittently switched from color to black & white with a promotional copy disclaimer pasted at the bottom of the picture. The video was on the soft side and not as crisp as could be. On the other hand, the surround sound was fine and clear.

Our copy also did not include any extras. However, according to the product description at Image Entertainment, the DVD is to feature an interview with Ferguson, plus a speech he delivered at Boston's Faneuil Hall as part of the city's Independence Day celebration.

Ferguson's a very likable chap and his Scottish brogue is cool, but this routine is far from a great comic performance. There are amusing moments to be had, but its mostly middling material with no outright hilarity. Ferguson's capable of better and has done superior work on The Late Late Show.

This is a rental at best.
