All Rise...

Judge David Johnson looked into cannibalism, but he didn't want to deal with the carbs.

The Charge

WARNING: Contains Never-Before-Released Scenes of Cannibal Sex Carnage!—DVD packaging tagline

Opening Statement

That's a tall order. But if anyone can deliver, it's renowned Eurosleaze auteur Jess Franco.

Facts of the Case

So there are these cannibals and they live deep in the jungle and they love tying up nude women to trees and biting the s—-- out of them. Meanwhile, in civilization, a group of kidnappers nab a blonde starlet and haul her off to a cave deep within said jungle.

When the trade-off goes awry, the kidnappers and would be rescuers find themselves on a collision course with the natives, who zero in on the succulent Caucasian flesh.

The Evidence

Well, you're going to get pretty much everything you sign up for.

Sex? Sure! Well, not really. There's some fornicating on a boat, but most of the flesh exposure is limited to the ladies tied to whatever inanimate object accommodates them. Actress Ursula Fellner is obviously extremely comfortable with her body and spends virtually all of the runtime in various states of undress.

Cannibalism? Loads! Your garden-variety cannibals who enjoy just gnawing on their victims. Live, too. These folks aren't slow-roasted in a brick oven. They're strapped to a tree or to the sacrificial tribal slab and the cannibals circle around and get their chew on. The gore effects aren't too bad, cheap as hell, sure, but real messy and the prosthetic wounds and bite marks looks legitimate enough not to hamstring the entire endeavor. The blood resembles Bolognese pasta sauce, though.

Crazy Naked Cannibal Man with Huge Bug Eyes? Oh yeah! This guy is the piston that drives Devil Hunter forward. Actually, the sex and cannibalism is what drives the film, but this crazy bastard is who you'll likely remember. He's the omnipresent "slasher" figure of the film who runs around smoking anyone that nature or spike pits or starving cannibals couldn't get to. The camera often takes his POV shot, which takes the form of fuzzy, drunken goggles. Makes sense, because the guy has these crazy, bleeding, bulging eyeballs. He also screams guttural cries and makes terrifying faces. But the scariest thing is his exposed wang, which he waves with reckless abandon.

There's nothing else to add, really. The storyline is threadbare and the characters are idiots (the horrid dubbing makes their dialogue endlessly entertaining) but Jess Franco does not hesitate in blasting out the nipples and bloodshed.

The film scores a decent 1.85:1 widescreen transfer that's more than crisp enough considering its age. Not much gusto from the 2.0 mono soundtrack, though. One extra: an interview with Jess Franco.

Closing Statement

It is what it is—trash.

The Verdict

The accused is encouraged to investigate the benefits of a vegan diet.
