All Rise...

Judge Dawn Hunt's Easter Adventures usually involve trying to get dye stains out of nice clothes.

The Charge

An Easter Fiesta For All!

The Case

Dora the Explorer is a juggernaut in the world of children's programming. Highlight of the Nickelodeon channel's programming known as Nick Jr, it targets preschoolers and early elementary kiddies. Each episode focuses on necessary skills like reading, counting, memory, and color recognition. However, what has set the show apart is its insistence on including a bilingual aspect, helping kids appreciate and learn Spanish.

While formulaic, it's clear this is a formula that works, as the show keeps cranking out new episodes and putting out DVD releases. One of the latest releases is Dora's Easter Adventure which follows the same format as its predecessors: put three episodes on one disc, and name the disc after the first episode. This time around we have the titular episode and two others, listed below.

• "Dora's Easter Adventure"
Dora (Fatima Ptacek) and Boots (Regan Mizrahi) eagerly await the arrival of the Hip Hop Bunny (Yael Goldberg) who delivers all the eggs for the Egg Hunt. But Swiper (Marc Weiner) swipes the basket holding all the eggs, jeopardizing the festivities.

• "The Grumpy Old Troll Gets Married"
When it's time for him to get married, The Grumpy Old Troll (Chris Gifford) can't find the rings.

• "Dora in Troll Land"
Dora (Caitlin Sanchez) goes to Troll Land in order to rescue the Grumpy Old Troll who's stuck in a magic hole.

Dora's Easter Adventure treads on a heavily worn path. Dora always saves the day and the kids watching learn the same types of things through the same setups, though the elements occasionally change. While repetition is important in both advertising and verifying scientific results, when watching a kids' show it tends to be more of the in-your-face type than I tend to gravitate toward.

The technical specs are basic. The video is a full frame 1.33:1 transfer while the audio is a simple Dolby Digital 2.0 track. The video boasts fully saturated if not high-res colors and manages to avoid any pixilating or distortion. The audio will not rock your system at all, but your little ones will be able to sing along with Dora and that's what matters.

The special features are two-fold. First is an enhanced version of "Dora's Easter Adventure" which means at certain points in the video a narrator guides the audience through a more thorough investigation of the scene at hand. The second is a set of karaoke videos which all offer lyrics on or off, whichever you or your young ones prefer.

I've learned with Dora the decision to purchase is usually based on a simple question: How much Dora can you take? If the answer is "not a lot" then a disc like Dora's Easter Adventure may be perfect. With a runtime at just over an hour it's probably just long enough. If the answer is "quite a bit" then you may want to wait until there's a great sale or a release that really packs the Dora in.
