You'll never want to wake up.
Dreammaster: Erotic Invader is rudimentary "late nite blue movie" fare. The sex is conservative, the acting wooden, the sets claustrophobic, and the plot laughable. However, the women take their clothes off, which is generally what you're shooting for in this sort of thing.
Facts of the Case
Grant (played by Patrick Ahern, if you're curious) is a professor hopelessly absorbed in his dream studies. His very fine gal pal gives up on him and leaves, but not before a last torrid love session. Their session is interrupted by a mysterious dark woman clad in leather (Patricia Skeriotis). She taunts Grant and he startles awake in his lonely bed. Something trippy is afoot here!
Grant has been lucid dreaming, a state of conscious control over his dreams. But the woman has thwarted his control, and Grant wants to find out why. He enlists the aid of three intrepid undergrads to help him in his research, among them the delectable September (Lisa Boyle). Together they explore their most erotic dreams and face down the dark stranger. Fortunately, September is psychic, which comes in very handy.
Some late-night erotic efforts are quirky, entertaining us through blithe mindless fun. Others are photorealistic and edgy, sparking our interest through stunning camerawork, interesting lighting, and daring chances. But most are routine, predictable. You can anticipate every dropped undergarment, every steamy embrace. You know just how long to spend in the kitchen or bathroom before the next hot scene. Dreammaster: Erotic Invader is in the latter camp.
If you've seen such films, you are likely accustomed to the uninspired production values. White titles on a black background with an indiscriminant, throbbing soundtrack. The actor's voices echoing in the less-than-ideal acoustic environments. Soft picture quality with lots of grain and poor contrast. Dreammaster: Erotic Invader has all of the above. There are questionable lighting decisions, particularly given the low shadow detail. Thus, it is hard to discern the precise moment the bra is unclasped and the inept fondling begins.
The acting in Dreammaster: Erotic Invader leaves much to be desired. The haughty villainess laughs wickedly. The mindless party boy high-fives his way through with gnarly aplomb. Grant is stoic, bland. Fortunately Lisa Boyle is around to provide her patented wicked/innocent spark.
The plot is a matched set to the acting. Reality shifts at will to meet the current erotic demands. There is some falderal regarding a dream door and psychic power, with a vague threat of eternal enslavement as a soft-core sex slave to the dark woman. Fortunately, the undergrads master the highly complex psychophysiolocigal equipment in time to thwart her evil scheme.
When it's all said and done, Dreammaster: Erotic Invader doesn't leave much of a cinematic impression.
The Rebuttal Witnesses
The plot is an effective conduit for decent erotic action. The theme of exploring one's deepest erotic dreams is intriguing, and leads to some nifty bookend scenes. For example, one lovely lady is frustrated by a recurring dream: she is interrupted during hanky-panky with her foster brother. After undergoing a brief "dream therapy" session, she is able to wrest control of the dream and complete her late night encounter.
The best part about Dreammaster: Erotic Invader is the two ladies fighting over Grant's eternal soul. In one corner is Patricia Skeriotis, over the top as the wicked Devora. Her light-bondage mayhem and sinister smile add a dark undercurrent to the proceedings. In the other corner is the breathtaking Lisa Boyle. His honor must admit a deep-seated bias in favor of this defendant. She is smoldering, playful, and flirtatious with a streak of malice. I once thought it would be hard to screw up an erotic film with Lisa in it, but Dreammaster: Erotic Invader nearly does: she isn't allowed to exercise her natural talents to their potential.
If you are a fan of Lisa Boyle or Patricia Skeriotis, this one is definitely worth a look. Other than that, it is indistinguishable from scads of other late nite blue movies.
The leading ladies are free to go after filling out paperwork in his honor's chamber. The rest of the defendants are to be placed back in the pool with the rest of their contemporaries. Perhaps they will distinguish themselves another day.
