All Rise...

Judge David Johnson has seen funnier animals lying prone on the side of the road.

The Charge

Look at the dog chasing the cat! That's some funny %$#&!!!

The Case

If you think cats jumping in toilets or dogs sliding down snowy hills or birds flying into people's hair are the very definition of inspired comedy, then have I got a few discs for you!

The Funniest of the Planet's Funniest Animals, the long-running clip show from Animal Planet, has quite a lot to live up to, judging by that title. Not only do we have a crop of video clips documenting the exploits of the planet's funniest animals, but these here are the best of the funniest animals on the frickin' planet!!!

Well, I was prepared to laugh myself sideways because of that strong declaration. You can imagine my disappointment, however, when I quickly discovered that these critter hijinks weren't nearly as uproarious as the title suggested. Heck, these weren't even the funniest animals in my living room! (My cat was licking herself on the couch next to me.)

These clips seem to be the stuff that missed the cut for America's Funniest Home Videos; this is accurate, as watching some schmuck get smacked in the groin with a Whiffleball bat would have been exceedingly more amusing than 95 percent of the animal antics in this set.

Seriously, a good percentage of the bits were of animals just doing what animals do, like chasing each other, looking at the mirror, making weird faces, or falling off of sofas. Occasionally the monotony would be broken up by an authentically funny clip, say, a baboon sticking its butt in another baboon's face, but this uneven ratio of unfunny clips to funny ones (like 150:1) makes for a bland feature.

Plus this is a damn cheesy presentation. The narrator, Matt Gallant, cracks the lamest jokes, doing his best to channel the spirit of early '90s Bab Saget, but comes far short—and that's saying quite a lot.

Also, each program (they run about 53 minutes each) is broken up into thematic segments, usually given a cutesy title like "Crazy Critters" or "Cranky Critters" or "Crazy-ass Mother%&$@#&%$ Cranky Critters." Episodes are capped by five minutes worth of "never-before-seen footage."

Now I'll admit that smart-ass 20-somethings like me are probably not the target demographic for a set like this, but it's difficult for me to imagine anyone will find these dumb bits that funny. In fact, I asked my wife if I should give this set as a gift to our four-year-old nephew, and she unequivocally shot that down (sigh…it was worth a shot trying to save a few bucks for Christmas shipping).

I'd say young kids, boring families, and old ladies with lots of cats will probably enjoy these discs the most (add "senile" to any of those groups and you have a guaranteed hit on your hands).
