All Rise...

The Charge

Shocking true Hollywood stories!

The Case

Hollywood The Dark Side: Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe is one of those discs you wonder why a distributor would even bother to release. It's a DVD with three short features about Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and a look at famous blondes. The segments are made up of stock footage, and look like they are ports from VHS with no additional work done on them.

They cover things you already know if you're a fan of Frank or Marilyn, and only are nice since they feature interviews from the vaults with some people who knew them well. The quality is truly terrible. The picture freezes often, the image is sub par even for VHS, and the whole thing looks messy and sloppy.

Some facts are even wrong in the narration. Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" is mentioned as being in How to Marry a Millionaire when it is actually from Gentleman Prefer Blondes. Another mistake is referring to Jayne Mansfield's accident as beheading her which is incorrect at least in part. These gaffes could be forgivable if we got valuable insight into Frank Sinatra or Marilyn Monroe, but we don't. We just get to see clips of the icons and see people talk about them for twenty or thirty minutes.

This release comes from Little Dizzy! which is an enterprise founded by Former Motown record producer/songwriter Michael Sutton and Roberta "Birdie" Wilcox. Hopefully they both will find better projects for their video company other than short stock footage of Hollywood legends.

The single extra is a look at famous blondes which is just the third segment I've been referring to this whole review.

Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe are fascinating figures, but they aren't given much respect in this release. Hollywood The Dark Side: Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe promises salacious stories of the stars, but simply delivers sorry surveys of people we know better than the people who produced these segments. Sad really.

Perhaps it's all worth a look if you're a diehard fan just to see the news reel footage, but even that sputters and stops frequently. I'd say give this one a pass and find an E! True Hollywood Story to satisfy your need for revelations of the stars.

The Verdict

Guilty of not being what it promises, Hollywood The Dark Side: Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe is just too common to be anything you'd want from the title.
