All Rise...

Judge David Johnson is a rock star...in his own mind.

The Charge

Take a journey inside the Palace of Wisdom, and experience the Shaman of Sexy. (Which, ironically, is exactly what my welcome mat says.)

The Case

Up-and-coming WWE wrestling star John Morrison nabs his own special DVD release, a longish collection of his most famous matches (abridged for time), biographical information, interview footage and behind-the-scenes stuff. All of this mayhem adds up to three hard-hitting hours of dudes hitting each other hard.

I'm not a wrestling fan and have never heard of this guy. Sure the big names like Kane, Undertaker, Triple H, and John Cena are recognizable, but I confess my ignorance to the new blood of the WWE. It's not that I don't follow the squared circle shenanigans because I'm a snobby elitist that dumps on wrestling; actually, I have a solid appreciation for what these gentlemen do and would go as far as saying that the WWE is in fact not fake. Scripted? Sure. Contrived and goofy? At times. But John Morrison and his ilk are committed entertainers and their performances in the ring—as gamed out as they may be—are nonetheless impressive.

That's my preface; I'm not going in with an axe to grind. But make no mistake, this DVD is strictly for fans of John Morrison. While he boasts the required flash and physique in the ring, the guy comes across as a kind of a wet blanket during the candid stuff. As a physical presence, he's a beast. As a conversationalist? Yeah, not really happening.

The bread and butter of John Morrison: Rock Star is the wrestling. Morrison's biggest matches are highlighted, and you can tell that he's relatively green in the industry as more than a couple of bouts find him on the losing end. Still, the man can perform and that alone points to a long and lucrative career between the turnbuckles. I'm not sure he has the chops to make the leap to feature films or anything, but that Starship Pain move is a winner. Sprinkled among the matches (which dominate the runtime) are segments where Morrison answers fan-mail, shows off his parkour moves, goes surfing and explains how he develops his ringside persona. These bits are balanced between being fairly interesting and filler.

The DVD: full frame, 2.0 stereo, and the lone bonus feature is the 2007 ECW match featuring John Morrison's first appearance (having transformed from Johnny Nitro).

The Verdict

Not Guilty, but, again, for fans only.
