The Charge

Who will take home The Sacko?

Opening Statement

It may not have the fanfare of other FX original productions, but The League is good for more than a few laughs.

Facts of the Case

Fantasy Football rules the world of five friends and their cutthroat competition to come home with The Shiva championship trophy spills into their personal lives—for the worse. Season Two chronicles the adventures of Pete, Ruxin, Taco, Kevin, Andre, and the newest League member, Jenny (Kevin's wife). It's a new wrinkle in the boy's club, but the players are about to discover she's got game.

The Evidence

Not to worry, fans. Jenny's involvement in The League doesn't detract from the bread and butter of the series, namely, laughing at a group of guys mercilessly making fun of each other.

Among the current lineup of half-hour TV comedies, The League may not occupy to the top tier, but it's solidly on the rung below. And there are times where it makes a play for consideration of being included with the heavy-hitters. For the balance, however, the show manages to offer a solid amount of laughs, a heavy dose of frat boy humor, and some sporadically brilliant plotting. Good enough for the silver, but the championship trophy eludes you!

What drives the series is the relationships between guys and, to be honest, there aren't many shows which have nailed the pointless banter, derisive ribbing, and rampant emasculation that defines so many plutonic male relationships. Hey, I know I can relate!

The Fantasy Football aspect is primarily used as a vehicle to move characters from one goofy predicament to another. In fact, there are episodes that barely even get into the football stuff. So despite cameos from NFL players Terrell Suggs, Josh Cribbs, and Chad Ochocinco (hey, Chad, as a Patriots fan, how about working on the playbook a little more instead of booking these gigs?), don't expect a heavy-duty football show. This is all about guys torturing each other for your amusement. I submit that you will indeed be amused.

The DVDs: 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, 5.1 Dolby Digital, extended episodes, deleted scenes, alternate takes, a gag reel, and a selection of brief bonus sketches.

Closing Statement

Dude humor abounds, but I laughed and that's half the battle. The other half is making dick jokes as often as possible and The League scores there too.

The Verdict

Not Guilty. TD!
