The Case

Lisa Rinna: Dance Body Beautiful: Jive, Jump, Ballroom Bump is a DVD that showcases a soap star cashing in on her new-found fame as a reality show dancer, and rallies that Dancing With the Stars stint to reinvent Rinna as a fitness instructor. She developed this routine with her on-air dance partner, Louis Van Amstel. It is not her invention, but she's making a buck or two off her face and incredible body. The thing is she's not a certified fitness guru, and it's all too clear she is reading cue cards and doing a routine Louis came up with. The biggest tactical error is on the entire DVD we never see Van Amstel, and truly the pair should have been front and center together to make this whole thing work better. But for some reason we just get Lisa Rinna, and maybe that's enough to make you shake your money maker for fitness. These routines do incorporate ballroom dancing moves to create a lively workout. The best thing about all of this is you will work legs, upper body, and your core muscles all at once, and learn a few dance steps along the way. Lisa Rinna makes an okay leader for all this. She's pretty, has a passion for her message, and seems to be having a good time throughout each dance routine.

First up, this disc includes a variation of the jive that has some pretty intense footwork. Lisa sometimes gets off time, but obviously enjoys the dance. For the average person this is going to be a challenge to follow. You go through a warm-up, a session where the basics are taught, the slow version, a medium variation, and finally the full-speed ahead workout. Also featured are sections that incorporate the cha cha, salsa, and even disco. Each one follows the same form with a breakdown, slow, medium, and fast versions. Each segment moves quickly, and you will need to combine the warmup with three segments and a cool down to get a full class here. That means some speedy workouts of your remote to go along with your exercise.

Okay, so my big beef with all this? Lisa Rinna has a job that requires her to look great since she is a television actress. Not only does the woman probably do crazy sessions at a gym with a high-priced trainer and nutritionist on her side, but she's apparently been enhanced by more than one session at the old nip tuck clinic. Her food is planned for her, and her whole life revolves around looking incredible. These routines are fun, but the lay person without a dance background is going to find it rough to follow. If you enjoy ballroom dancing and know the basics, this could be an engaging way to get some cardio in, but anybody else will need to study the breakdowns pretty hard to get in step with Rinna and her back-up dancers. Hell, even she can't keep up at some points!

Technically Warner Bros. has provided this DVD with a crisp widescreen transfer coupled with a clear enough stereo audio track. There are no options to get rid of the instructions and play music alone. The sole extra is a brief interview with Lisa Rinna to explain why she decided to do all this dance inspired exercise. Overall the menu interactions are clunky, and you'll find the lack of variety might make you a little bored after a while. Of course never fear, because Lisa Rinna has a whole series of these discs waiting for you if you clamor for more.

Whew! This ballroom stuff is actually pretty rough to follow, but it will work at improving your shape and form if done consistently and with the right intensity. Lisa Rinna: Dance Body Beautiful: Jive, Jump, Ballroom Bump is a good choice for people who love dancing, and don't mind an instructor who is more celebrity than fitness expert. It could have been more, but at least Lisa Rinna is likable and the routine uses the ballroom dancing as the basis. Of course this is all the rage now, so there's no shortage of cha cha aerobic workouts available to you currently. Why pick this one? Because none of them has a 46-year-old white woman trying to convince you she got her silicone enhanced body in the ballroom.
