The Charge

A team bonded by magic…

The Case

The San Francisco Giants had a fantastic run this year. The sense of euphoria the team managed to unleash in the beautiful city by the bay—and the rest of the world—was tremendous. It definitely took the Giants long enough to secure the trophy they've been hunting for many years, but 2010, it was all meant to be. Things didn't always go as planned, but after a suspenseful season filled with intense games, strong wins, and surprise losses, Bruce Bochy's gang was ready to go full force and close the deal. Major League Baseball's The Magic Inside DVD recaps the SF Giants' most memorable 2010 moments, offering viewers exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and some of the most intriguing parts from the year's biggest games.

Essentially, what you'll find on this disc is a 50-minute documentary that kicks off with footage from the Giants' training camp and follows the team from their home opener all the way through the World Series. Split into a bunch of short sections, the program primarily focuses on the noteworthy games the San Francisco Giants had to tackle throughout the season. Interviews with coaches, players, and MLB Network hosts provide a deeper perspective on what happened before, during, and after crucial games, while a well-structured, easy-to-follow narration accompanies the rest of the footage. The Magic Inside does a solid job showing viewers how the Giants learned to utilize their strengths and grow as a team as they battled to grab the lead and hold on to success through the playoffs and the World Series.

Some of the program's highlights include the team's battle against the San Diego Padres, the dive the Giants took in August, the September recovery, and the solid performances against the Braves and the Phillies. The piece also briefly examines the biggest plays of the World Series games versus the Texans, showcasing the talents of the team's most cherished athletes. Fans are also able to listen to Bochy, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Buster Posey, Aubrey Huff, Brian Wilson, and Cody Ross, who chat about their great run and provide additional details about how well the Giants were guided and what exactly it is that got them to the World Series. It's a bunch of talented folks speaking highly of their colleagues, and it's engaging to watch.

While the content of The Magic Inside is informative and fast-paced enough for Giants fans to once more relive this great year in the team's history, the program falls a little flat when it comes to the final part. Everything goes fairly quickly after we get to see the end of the game that crowned them champions. Before we know it, the credits are rolling, with no real focus on the fantastic parade that rocked San Francisco, no footage of the team hitting the big stage at City Hall, no excerpts from speeches, and no footage from the massive celebrations breaking out right after that final game. MLB producers could've easily stretched the program for another 10 minutes to include these highlights. Alas, they thought it was a better to wrap this earlier than later. Not a big deal, but it's an issue worth mentioning.

On the positive side, the DVD comes loaded with extras destined to please baseball fans. The bonus section features a bunch of footage from several games, including walk-off wins, strikeout games and some sweet home runs. A photo gallery is included as well. In terms of tech specs, both picture and audio transfers look and sound just fine.

Although not perfect, The Magic Inside does what it promises: it offers people a concise, entertaining look at what the San Francisco Giants were up to during the 2010 season, and it does a pretty decent job at highlighting all the things that played a crucial role in the team's successful run. It's undoubtedly worth listening to the players and coaches discuss training, team morale, acquisitions, games, and everything else that comes with professional baseball. It has really been a magical year for the Giants and their loyal fans, and this program pays tribute to all of them.
