All Rise...

For his speeding ticket court appearance, Judge David Johnson paid Andy Griffith $10,000 to lean over and whisper something into his ear.

The Charge

Exhibit A: Brilliant Drama.

The Case

The grey one returns for his eighth go-round and if you've been hankering for some righteous small-town crime-solving and courtroom shenanigans then Ben Matlock (Andy Griffith, The Andy Griffith Show) is your guy. For Season Eight, we get twenty episodes on six discs.

• The Play
• The Fatal Seduction (Parts 1 and 2)
• The Diner
• The View
• The Last Laugh
• The Capital Offense
• The Haunted (Parts 1 and 2)
• The Conspiracy
• Matlock's Bad, Bad, Bad Dream
• The Defendant
• The Kidnapping (Parts 1 and 2)
• The Temptation
• The Crook
• The Murder Game
• Brennen
• The P.I.
• The Godfather
• The Idol (Parts 1 and 2)

If you're in the market for this, then you know what to expect with Matlock: Andy Griffith doing his old-school, laid-back courtroom persona. With this eighth bite at the apple, he's perfected the routine. Cases are your typical low-impact stuff, as Matlock inevitablly gets caught in circumstances that far eclipse his actual attorney duties. But Griffith keeps it all moving along swimmingly; the guy is like a comfortable pair of slippers.

A few standout episodes: in Matlock: The Eighth Season: "The Play," where Matlock parlays his expertise into getting the director of his community theater production off the hook for murder in exchange for a speaking role in the play; "Matlock's Bad, Bad, Bad Dream," a, well, dream episode, allowing Griffith to go out of character and play Matlock up like an utter drunk; and "The P.I.," a good old-fashioned backdoor pilot, devoted to launching a series starring George Peppard and Tracy Nelson. Those last two are sure-fire signs that the end is coming and, indeed, the next season would be Matlock's last.

Standard-issue release: 1.33:1 full frame, Dolby 2.0 Stereo, and no extras.

The Verdict

I was bored stiff, but for fans? Not Guilty.
