All Rise...

Judge David Johnson went to the zoo once and got hit in the face with some monkeydoo.

The Charge

Learning through movement.

The Case

For a change of pace, here's a fitness DVD for the kids. Actually, it's more or less a gross motor skill DVD as the movements displayed don't require too much stamina, but, hey, at least it gets them away from the Sega, right?

Things That Go features the Monkeydoos, three animated monkeys named Flip, Tumble and Twist. These guys accompany real-life children through a variety of imagination-fueled exercise. For example, kids pretend they're airplanes, scooters and bicycles, and move their limbs and make sounds accordingly. The art fuels these exercises, surrounding the kids with animation and dancing monkeys.

A 20-something girl named Maureen is the host for the program. She lays out the different movements prior to the kids getting in on it. She introduces each section very cheerfully then launches into the choreography. The Monkeydoos themselves are merely window dressing, but they're animated well and are fun to look at.

The best thing this disc has going for it is the production values. I dig the animation, which is very colorful and bright. Both the characters and environments reflect this cartoonish style. The music that supplements the exercises is fast and light, perfectly complementing the animation.

Finally, this program just bubbles with energy. The cheerful host appears to run on 1.21 gigawatts of power. The exercises are quick and immediately transitioning. It is infectious and if I had a child I'd likely snag this DVD; it's a nice addition to a lean kids fitness genre.

Full frame, 2.0 stereo treatment for the technical details. For extras, you get a workout selection (i.e., chapter index) and a few arts and crafts activities.
