All Rise...

Judge David Johnzon kicked da schmoove movez wiggedy-wack old-zchool!

The Charge

When the instruction ends the party begins.

The Case

Hey, kidz! Are you itching to learn the killer new dance movez for the unknown rap zong "Bump, Shake, Wiggle," from up-and-coming (or so we're told) rapper Stevee? You are? Well, have I got some great newz for you! Off Da Hook Kidz is here to break it down for you!

This kid-friendly DVD will take you through four hip-hop dance routines that can eventually be strung together into one long compilation for this "Bounce, Shake, Wiggle" song. What makes Off Da Hook Kidz unique, besides its nonsensical title, is that the kids themselves handle the instruction. The moves are choreographed by a guy named Fenton "F-Troop" Fulgham, who introduces the video.

Here's how the program plays out: The seven dancing kids start each segment with a quick run-through of the specific routine they're going to teach. Then, the routine is broken down into slower, step-by-step how-to instruction, with one of the kids running point. Next, they speed up the dance a bit, and finally launch into the whole thing, set to music, at full speed. This formula is repeated four times for each of the four routines (all with hip names like "Da Bomb" and "Da Shake").

In between each of these segments is a discussion with Fulgham and the lead dancer/instructor, a 12-year-old girl named Blair. The two riff about how insanely great the dancing is and talk a little bit about the hip-hop life (minus the gunplay) and how dancing is a great workout, and so on and so forth. Fulgham is a charismatic guy, always smiling and instantly likable, but he's constantly tripping over his sentences; as a result, these casual chat sessions come across as disjointed and borderline incoherent.

But the thrust of the disc is the dance instruction, and in that area it works. With the kids themselves shouldering the teaching duties, combined with a clean and catchy—if obscure—song, and a bright and nifty set design, the end product is an active and innovative riff on the kids' workout genre. Your pop-star-wannabe rugrats should really get a kick out of this.

The picture looks pretty good. Everything is bright and clean and full of color. The dancers do their thang against a green screen, with some computer imagery overlaid on it. A boisterous 5.1 Dolby Digital mix pulls audio duty, and does it well: The music is powerful and fills the room.

Now, the DVD claims that a CD single of "Boom, Shake, Wiggle" accompanies, but my copy didn't come with one. If this is a disc you're going to pick up, be sure the CD comes with, as it is probably the only place you'll find the song. A few bios and a fun little blooper reel comprise the on-disc extras.
