All Rise...

Judge Mitchell Hattaway didn't really feel the earth move. He was just faking it.

The Charge

He's big. He's bad. He's a major force to be reckoned with.

The Case

I made a comment in my review of Earthquake: About Got Damm Time! regarding the uneven quality of the comedian's material during that particular performance, suggesting that perhaps fifteen minutes or so should have been trimmed. I guess maybe I should have kept my big mouth shut. This new disc, which features Earthquake's appearance on HBO's recently resurrected standup showcase, runs a scant thirty minutes, which is both good and bad. The short running time ensures that the material is pretty much gold, but the disc itself would have to be in order to justify the cost.

Earthquake is definitely getting better over time. Both he and his material (much of which is hilariously profane) are funnier and more focused than they've been in the past. In fact, the only problem with the material in this particular performance is that some of it is now a bit dated, although this isn't the comedian's fault. This show was taped in mid-2005, aired a few months later, and now arrives on DVD a full year after the taping, which means some of the jokes are past their expiration dates. That being said, I still found many of them funny, regardless of the fact they're no longer topical.

Here are some of the show's highlights:

• Earthquake on Michael Jackson: "He called me and invited my kids to come stay at his house. I told him my career was doing good and I didn't need the money. He should've called me a couple years ago. Go on up there son. Take one for the family. As soon as his shirt comes off, gimme a call."

• Earthquake on His Baby's Mama: "I been trying to legally kill her for years. When that sniper was running around I took her to D.C. and told her to pump some gas. I bought her a ticket to Thailand and told her to lay on the beach."

• Earthquake on the Lakers' Decision to Let Shaq Go: "Boston got The Curse of the Bambino. Now the Lakers got the Curse of Letting Go the Wrong Negro."

• Earthquake on Siegfried and Roy's Tigers: "They steal these tigers from over in Africa. They got, like, 150 of 'em. They snatch 'em when they're cubs. Them tigers don't even know they're tigers. They domesticate 'em, put 'em in big suites, make 'em do, like, nine, ten shows a day. Don't give 'em no money, just pay 'em with food. Do this story sound familiar?"

As for the technical aspects of the disc, you get a very good full frame transfer (the show looks to have been captured on digital video) and a clean, clear Dolby Stereo soundtrack (which is a little odd considering the original broadcast was presented in Dolby Surround). Extras include ten minutes of deleted scenes, one of which—a bit lampooning those women who go on Maury Povich's show looking for the father(s) of their children—contains some of the funniest stuff ever to come out of Earthquake's mouth.

Like I said earlier, the price is a little steep for half an hour of comedy (forty if you count the deleted scenes), but if you ever run across it a yard sale for a couple of bucks, grab it.
