All Rise...

Unfortunately, Judge David M. Gutierrez is no stranger to the tragic combination of "comedy" and a "one night stand."

The Charge

"Like Jesus cares about Mel Gibson's movie, you know? Look, I was raised Catholic, so I know he did that for me, so I appreciate it. Thank you. He should have asked first, you know? A little presumptuous."—Louis CK

The Case

I've written in earlier reviews that comedy is best when it's mean and angry. Comedy works when points out the obvious and says the things we're afraid to say or don't think to. Louis CK, who wrote for Saturday Night Live, Late Show with David Letterman, and The Chris Rock Show, knows this.

In One Night Stand: Louis CK, CK points out the quirks and stupidities in his life. He talks about marriage, raising a child, his spirituality (or lack thereof), and how things don't work in life. CK's fearless enough to admit his frustrations with his child, referring to her as a jerk frequently interfering in his sex life. He's open about how he and his wife can't communicate and tell a decent story.

Louis CK strikes me as being trapped by life's establishments and situations, left with nothing to do but point things out and poke fun. The only way he can cope and get his revenge is through his act. He has no power in his home over his wife and child. He's a victim with a sharp tongue and a microphone. Surprisingly, his routines never come off as whiny, needy, or desperate, instead shaping that anger, fear, and frustration into fiercely-delivered punch lines that punch holes through the everyday.

The DVD struck me as incredibly short with its half-hour running time. Still, those who want more get additional footage from this act and an earlier Louis CK appearance from Young Comedians included as special features on this DVD. Also included is a behind-the-scenes look and sneak peek at his new HBO series, Lucky Louie. Fans of Louis CK's comedy will see his act - including many jokes and situations from this DVD—making their way onto the show. It's not a terrible thing, but somehow the material works better in his stand-up than as a sitcom. The gig shown here was rated TV-MA when it aired.

Presented in full frame with a simple 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack, this DVD gets a serviceable treatment from HBO Video. Nothing fancy, but nothing to cry about, either.

The best part of Louis CK's act? When it ends, you're left wanting more. Check out One Night Stand: Louis CK.

Case dismissed.
