All Rise...

Judge Daryl Loomis was relieved to find out this wasn't an exposé on that magazine subscription he left hanging back in Germany.

The Case

Chuck and Barney (Roger Caine and Zebedy Colt) are telephone repairmen who hate to work. When they are sent on assignment to fix an airplane phone, they think of a great idea: they'll hide in the luggage compartment and the plane will fly them somewhere fun! Their totally brilliant plan backfires on them, however, when they are discovered and are removed from the plane midflight. Luckily, they have parachutes and can lazily float down to the German countryside below. No money in their pockets but with all the time in the world, they wander into town and get jobs at a bar. While they do hate to work, they're paid in handfuls of deutschemarks and German flesh. Sexy misadventures ensue with these wild and crazy guys in what feels like the O Lucky Man of pornos.

While I'd planned on writing an in depth analysis of the plot in Playgirls of Munich, I eventually thought better of it. I don't know if it was the intricacy of the story that scared me or the fact that it's Dutch pornography, but it didn't seem quite so appropriate. The story is ridiculous in every way and, no surprise here, every plot device is strictly around to get our friends to the next sex scene. Weird and senseless as the plot turns may be, at least there's something posing as a plot, which is more than can be said about the modern equivalent. In many ways, though, they just don't make 'em like they used to. Today, the adult market is a billion dollar industry and is a thing unto itself, but these early filmmakers had pretensions about making real movies. By any measure of course, Playgirls of Munich is a terrible film, but the use of story, dialogue, and cinematography actually makes it watchable as a movie; something that is impossible today.

From a pragmatic perspective, the action in the film serves its purpose. The women are attractive in their natural sort of way: hairy, happy, and full of life. By all appearances, they had a great time making the film. They could be faking it, I suppose; sometimes it's hard for us guys to tell. The locales vary from swimming pools to bar bathrooms to sororities lit bright red and all are shot from creative, sometimes bizarre, angles that really get you inside the action. Between all of these scenes, writer/director Navred Reef lays on as much comedy as possible. While the jokes are sophomoric and not very funny at any point, it passes the time fairly well.

After Hours Cinema has done the best possible job with Playgirls of Munich given its age and treatment. There is some damage to the original print they used to transfer the film, but the transfer itself looks great otherwise. Widescreen and remastered for the first time, the colors look sharp and, for better or for worse, all the action is clearly visible. The mono sound is as good as could be expected. There is some pretty bad dubbing, so it comes off badly, but there is little background noise to get in the way of all those grunts and moans. On the first half of this two disc set, a series of trailers accompanies the film. On the second disc, there are about twice as many additional trailers (some of which are repeats from the first set) and five single reel loops that get right to business. Playgirls of Munich does exactly what it sets out to do.

Case dismissed. This strange, sexy relic from the '70s is free to go. Fräuleins, vielen dank für kommen.
