"Join Twilight Sparkle and Her Friends for Year-Round Fun!"
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a reimagining of the 1980s cartoon which premiered in 2010. A Pony for Every Season is a pony primer, if you will, featuring each of the Mane 6 (pun intended) ponies who populate Ponyville and lead us on our adventures each episode. Speaking of which, they are:
"Look Before You Sleep"
"Apple Family Reunion"
"Keep Calm and Flutter On"
"Winter Wrap Up"
"Too Many Pinkie Pies"
This disc strives to teach those watching about the value of friendship. Unlike other kids' shows, this one aims to do its lesson-giving through situations, as opposed to straight-up educational programming, which would concern itself with improving a child's knowledge base. The show is decisive, to be sure, with some dismissing it as fluff. However, I find value in a show that would have its viewers try and be better friends. It's nice, simply put. I'm not the target audience but there's nothing offensive here, just plain old values wrapped up in bright colors and occasionally wacky situations. Plus Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Q" (John de Lancie) provides a voice for sporadic villain and fan favorite Discord. What more do you want?
The video transfer's color palette is bright and crisp and there isn't a lot of delineation in terms of saturation between the characters and their backgrounds. That being said a lot of care is taken to add textures and shadows and the like so the resulting animation is a step above what current CGI kids' programs offer. Likewise the sound is an impressive Dolby Digital 5.1 and everything sounds full and balanced but the track's true strength is revealed during the many musical numbers within this disc as the background vocals are never lost beneath the main score or the main vocal track.
The lone special feature is a sing-along video to the winter wrap-up song we see during "Winter Wrap Up."
If you or someone you know is a fan of the show already, A Pony for Every Season may well be a no-brainer for you to purchase. If you are a newbie to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and want to see what all the fuss is about, this is a decent place to start.
