The spirit of the Samurai goes golden.
The Power Rangers Samurai are the most recent draftees in the never-ending battle against evil and sorrow of the Haim Saban Universe, or the Sabaniverse as it's commonly called in my bathroom.
By day, our heroes—Jayden, Kevin, Emily, Mia, and Mike—spend their time training hard at a samurai dojo and occasionally going for walks in the park or drinking juice. Their task is no small one: to defend the world from the incursion of the Nighlok monsters, a legion of beasts trapped on an old boat in a parallel dimension. Their leader, the diabolical Maser Xandred, wants to tear a space-time rift and flood our world with noxious slime water.
This fourth volume of the Power Rangers Samurai adventures focus on the addition of the crew's newest member: The Gold Ranger. He is Antonio, a long lost friend of Jayden's with attitude and some plastic sea creature abomination Zord thing that's just as cumbersome and unwieldy as the fully assembled Samurai mega-robot-Zord. How these lumbering nightmares ever repel the gigantic monsters that threaten our way of life I beyond me…but I'm grateful!
The four episodes included here—"Unexpected Arrival," "Room for One More," "The Blue and the Gold, and "Team Spirit"—all center on Antonio's inclusion to the Samurai detachment and the moral of the story (as always) is Go Teamwork! The true draw, of course, is the action and Power Rangers Samurai is as over-the-top as any Power Rangers series. Lots of CGI, lost of molded plastic, some standard-issue cannon-fodder-throttling martial artistr,y and a noisy finale featuring gonzo creature designs.
The DVD lowdown: standard def 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, Dolby 5.1 Surround, English CC subtitles, a blooper reel, "Ask a Ranger," and a short exercise video.
